Forensic Files - Season 8, Episode 29 - Smoke in Your Eyes - Full Episode

December 16, 2021 / 22:08

This episode covers the 1999 apartment fire in Iowa City that resulted in the deaths of two women, Laura Watson Dalton and Maria Laner. It discusses the investigation that revealed the women were murdered before the fire was set, the forensic evidence collected, and the eventual arrest of suspect John Memmer.

On March 1999, firefighters responded to a blaze at an apartment near the University of Iowa, discovering the bodies of Laura Watson Dalton, a paramedic, and Maria Laner, an environmental scientist. Both women were found to have died from blunt force trauma prior to the fire.

Investigators found evidence suggesting the fire was intentionally set, including a gasoline container and a matchbook. They also discovered a pair of eyeglasses and a cigarette butt at the scene, which led them to suspect a tall man who smoked cigarettes.

John Memmer, a drifter, was identified after pawning stolen items from the apartment. He had a burn on his nose and was linked to the crime scene through DNA evidence found on the cigarette butt and blood on his shoes.

Memmer was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The episode highlights how forensic science played a crucial role in solving the case.

00:00:07
a suspicious fire swept through an
00:00:09
apartment killing two young women the
00:00:12
cause of the fire and the identity of
00:00:14
the victims were unclear
00:00:17
but a closer look at the fire scene
00:00:19
revealed
00:00:20
something hidden in the ashes
00:00:23
could gas chromatography a burned pair
00:00:26
of eyeglasses and a half-smoked
00:00:28
cigarette solved the case

on a spring night in march of 1999
00:01:04
firefighters in iowa city rushed to an
00:01:06
apartment building engulfed in flames
00:01:08
near the university of iowa campus
00:01:22
when they arrived they had fire blowing
00:01:24
out windows and doors of the apartment
00:01:26
building
00:01:27
immediately had
00:01:29
the opportunity and the necessity to
00:01:32
initiate an aggressive fire attack
00:01:35
[Music]
00:01:37
just inside the entrance firefighters
00:01:40
found what appeared to be a body
00:01:43
then in the back bedroom
00:01:46
another gruesome discovery
00:01:48
they were unable to see
00:01:50
and so i had to use the just feeling
00:01:54
their way around the apartment and
00:01:56
checking on the bed they found
00:01:58
the second victim
00:02:00
a driver's license found next to one of
00:02:03
the bodies
00:02:04
belonged to 29 year old laura watson
00:02:08
dalton
00:02:09
a paramedic who had come to iowa city to
00:02:12
visit her cousin
00:02:14
she had really loved the town and it was
00:02:16
st patrick's day and that was one of her
00:02:18
favorite holidays and i think because
00:02:20
it's a college town sort of a great
00:02:23
party atmosphere for st patrick's day
00:02:25
she decided to go there and visit
00:02:26
friends
00:02:28
the second victim matched the
00:02:29
description of a woman who had been
00:02:31
reported missing
00:02:33
she was 27 year old maria lainer an
00:02:36
environmental scientist who was in town
00:02:38
on a business trip and was staying at a
00:02:40
nearby hotel
00:02:42
we was hoping and praying it wasn't her
00:02:44
but
00:02:45
back of our minds
00:02:47
we kind of knew it was
00:02:49
they had found her
00:02:50
blazer in a parking ramp and it hadn't
00:02:53
been
00:02:54
it had been driven for a while
00:02:59
the apartment was rented to three
00:03:00
college students who claimed they were
00:03:02
out of town on the night of the fire
00:03:05
the men said they gave no one permission
00:03:08
to stay there
00:03:09
and they also denied knowing either
00:03:11
laura watson or maria laner
00:03:15
at the morgue the medical examiner found
00:03:17
evidence that the women were dead before
00:03:20
the fire started
00:03:22
there was no soot in the lungs of either
00:03:25
victim
00:03:26
therefore we were able to conclude
00:03:28
scientifically that they expired prior
00:03:31
to the fire
00:03:33
it was
00:03:34
evident they had both been
00:03:38
killed by blunt force trauma to the head
00:03:42
inside the apartment
00:03:44
investigators found a barbell that
00:03:46
contained blood and human hair leading
00:03:49
to speculation that this was the murder
00:03:52
weapon
00:03:55
they also found a gasoline container
00:03:58
you might find gasoline cans stored of
00:04:01
course in garage or
00:04:03
utility closets but
00:04:05
to find a gasoline can in a hallway of
00:04:08
an apartment
00:04:09
i think that's that would be rather odd
00:04:13
investigators believed that the fire may
00:04:15
have been intentionally set
00:04:18
and that clues to the killer's identity
00:04:20
could be waiting at the crime scene
00:04:23
hidden in the smoldering ashes
00:04:27
and they also wondered
00:04:28
why these two women were in an apartment
00:04:31
rented by men
00:04:33
they'd never even met
00:04:39
the lack of soot and smoke in the
00:04:41
victim's lungs revealed that the two
00:04:43
women were killed before the fire
00:04:45
started
00:04:47
and when the medical examiner compared
00:04:49
the amount of tissue damage between the
00:04:52
two victims he discovered something
00:04:54
astonishing
00:04:56
the two victims were killed
00:04:58
on different days
00:05:01
it is clear that aura died in the late
00:05:05
hours on wednesday or the early morning
00:05:07
hours on thursday and remained in that
00:05:10
apartment where she died
00:05:12
and then maria died late thursday night
00:05:15
or early friday morning in the
00:05:18
same apartment
00:05:20
laura watson's friends told police that
00:05:22
they last saw her in a local bar on
00:05:24
wednesday night two nights before the
00:05:26
fire
00:05:28
laura was talking to a man sitting
00:05:30
beside her
00:05:32
and someone that you've had a
00:05:33
conversation with that's been kind of
00:05:34
interesting asks you if you'd like to
00:05:37
you know go to another party or or go to
00:05:39
another bar
00:05:40
lots of people have done that and and
00:05:43
it's a situation where most of us don't
00:05:46
think that we're going to place
00:05:47
ourselves in peril
00:05:49
witnesses said laura left with the man
00:05:53
around midnight
00:05:55
he was described as tall in his twenties
00:05:58
with unkept brown hair
00:06:00
and glasses
00:06:04
investigators discovered the same thing
00:06:06
happened to maria laner on the following
00:06:09
night
00:06:11
the owner of a different bar said he saw
00:06:13
maria leaving his establishment with a
00:06:15
man matching the same description
00:06:18
she didn't have as good as judgment as
00:06:20
she would have if she wasn't drinking
00:06:23
maybe he said hey there's a party over
00:06:26
at this place you want to come with me i
00:06:29
don't think she ever did it before i
00:06:31
think this is one time and it wasn't
00:06:34
and it was the wrong time
00:06:37
since the victims had been murdered on
00:06:39
two different nights
00:06:41
the killer apparently had free access to
00:06:43
the apartment and could come and go as
00:06:46
he pleased
00:06:48
but the college students who rented it
00:06:50
said they had no idea who the killer was
00:06:56
after the last embers were out
00:06:58
the iowa department of criminal
00:07:00
investigations examined the scene for
00:07:03
clues
00:07:05
investigators noticed a hole in the
00:07:07
outside wall of the apartment and there
00:07:10
was a gas container found just inside
00:07:12
the front door
00:07:15
to see if an accelerant had been used
00:07:18
investigators placed some of the debris
00:07:20
in an air-tight container and sent it to
00:07:23
the lab for analysis
00:07:26
criminalists placed an activated
00:07:28
charcoal strip into the can overnight
00:07:32
then washed it with the carbon disulfide
00:07:36
the vials were placed in a gas
00:07:37
chromatograph mass spectrometer for
00:07:40
analysis
00:07:41
it will separate it out based on the
00:07:43
physical properties and chemical
00:07:44
properties of the components of what
00:07:47
ignitable liquid may be in that sample
00:07:49
and everything flows through the
00:07:51
instrument at a different rate and it'll
00:07:53
actually separate out those and you'll
00:07:54
see the individual components of each
00:07:56
component of the ignitable liquid
00:08:01
the results were clear
00:08:03
gasoline had been used to start the fire
00:08:07
apparently the gasoline vapors ignited
00:08:10
causing the explosion that blew through
00:08:12
the outside wall
00:08:14
investigators also discovered a
00:08:17
matchbook in the debris
00:08:19
the gasoline had to be ignited by
00:08:21
something
00:08:22
and so when the fire marshal
00:08:25
collected a matchbook
00:08:29
in or around that fire scene
00:08:31
that was really a fresh
00:08:34
matchbook with only one match missing
00:08:38
the fire had destroyed any prints that
00:08:40
might have been on the matchbook
00:08:44
steve duffy looked through all of the
00:08:46
photos taken at the fire scene searching
00:08:48
for items that may have been overlooked
00:08:54
in one of the photographs
00:08:56
he noticed something that looked like a
00:08:57
pair of eyeglasses
00:08:59
when he returned to the apartment
00:09:02
they were still there
00:09:04
they were very obviously prescription
00:09:05
eyeglasses
00:09:07
and i hoped that i could
00:09:08
[Music]
00:09:10
go back through those prescriptions to
00:09:12
find the owners
00:09:15
none of the tenants or victims owned the
00:09:17
glasses
00:09:18
[Music]
00:09:20
duffy also found a cigarette butt still
00:09:22
very much intact
00:09:25
this cigarette
00:09:26
had been
00:09:28
smoked
00:09:29
had not been put out had not been
00:09:31
stomped out on the floor
00:09:33
in other words it was still burning when
00:09:36
it hit the carpet
00:09:38
investigators suspected that the
00:09:41
perpetrator lit a cigarette then started
00:09:44
to pour the gasoline throughout the
00:09:46
apartment
00:09:48
at some point his cigarette probably
00:09:51
ignited the gases
00:09:53
he received a burn on his nose
00:09:56
he either swatted at his face
00:09:58
and knocked his glasses off or he the
00:10:01
glasses fell off his face
00:10:03
and the cigarette flew out of his mouth
00:10:06
now investigators were looking for a
00:10:08
tall unkept man who smoked cigarettes
00:10:11
and possibly had a burned face
00:10:14
he may also have been missing his
00:10:16
eyeglasses
00:10:22
one week after a fire gutted their
00:10:24
apartment the three college students who
00:10:26
rented it were allowed to return
00:10:29
there were items stolen from the
00:10:30
apartment that included a vcr or two
00:10:35
and some other electronic equipment
00:10:39
investigators checked local pawn shops
00:10:41
to see if someone had sold the stolen
00:10:43
goods
00:10:45
and they got their first break
00:10:47
a pawn shop owner recalled buying these
00:10:50
items from a young man just a few days
00:10:52
earlier
00:10:54
in iowa
00:10:55
anyone selling to a pawn shop must show
00:10:58
some form of identification with an
00:11:01
address
00:11:03
the man who sold the items
00:11:05
was john memmer
00:11:07
a 23 year old drifter
00:11:09
known around town as a partier
00:11:13
john memmer
00:11:14
was very adept at
00:11:17
inviting himself to those after hours
00:11:18
parties
00:11:21
because of that
00:11:24
he was
00:11:25
a person who could con his way into
00:11:28
staying over
00:11:30
at any number of apartments
00:11:32
and sleeping on their couch or what have
00:11:34
you
00:11:36
one of the apartment tenants said he
00:11:38
knew memr and had let him sleep
00:11:40
overnight a few weeks earlier
00:11:42
he didn't have a lot of friends he
00:11:44
didn't have a job he wasn't enrolled as
00:11:46
a student
00:11:47
he was sleeping where he could
00:11:51
he was very transient and yes that made
00:11:53
it more difficult to find him mr memmer
00:11:56
basically made his living by being a
00:11:57
thief
00:11:58
police finally caught up with memr who
00:12:01
was on probation at the time for a
00:12:03
forgery conviction
00:12:06
when he was questioned
00:12:08
investigators noticed he had a burn
00:12:10
injury on his nose
00:12:13
memr admitted he had been in the
00:12:15
apartment while the tenants were away
00:12:18
and also confessed to stealing their
00:12:20
stereo and television set but
00:12:23
he denied killing the women or setting
00:12:26
the fire
00:12:28
he said there was another drifter
00:12:29
sleeping in the apartment that week too
00:12:32
[Music]
00:12:33
police wanted to see if they could tie
00:12:36
memor to the evidence
00:12:38
immediately after the fire explosion he
00:12:41
did not have eyeglasses
00:12:43
and during the following week
00:12:45
he acquired another pair of glasses
00:12:50
using a machine called a lensometer
00:12:53
an optometrist determined the degree of
00:12:55
curvature or diopters of the lenses
00:12:59
the strength of the lenses matched the
00:13:02
prescription memory had been given by
00:13:04
his eye doctor in john mimer's situation
00:13:07
he needed his eyeglasses to see
00:13:10
he would not leave his eyeglasses laying
00:13:13
around
00:13:14
so to find his eyeglasses
00:13:16
at the scene of a double homicide
00:13:19
and arson
00:13:20
was significant
00:13:23
police needed
00:13:25
more proof
00:13:26
they looked once again at the cigarette
00:13:28
butt
00:13:29
the one investigator suspected had
00:13:32
inadvertently ignited the fire
00:13:35
was it possible
00:13:37
this cigarette butt contained the
00:13:40
killer's dna
00:13:43
scientists removed the wrapper from the
00:13:45
lip end of the cigarette then
00:13:48
separated any cells present in the paper
00:13:53
the biological sample was then
00:13:55
reproduced to create a larger sample for
00:13:58
analysis
00:13:59
then compared to a dna sample taken from
00:14:02
memor while in custody
00:14:05
it was a match
00:14:06
statistically the the chances of the dna
00:14:09
and the cigarette butt coming from
00:14:10
anyone but mr memor are too small to
00:14:14
consider
00:14:16
but memr admitted being in the apartment
00:14:19
which could account for him leaving his
00:14:21
glasses and the cigarette butt
00:14:24
police needed
00:14:25
more proof
00:14:28
investigators then examined laura
00:14:30
dalton's leather jacket found in the
00:14:32
apartment
00:14:34
somebody came up and said you know while
00:14:36
we have this jacket why don't you go
00:14:37
ahead and look at the jacket maybe
00:14:38
there's a print on a button a snap or
00:14:40
something
00:14:42
criminalist bessman checked the jacket
00:14:44
under a high intensity light
00:14:47
no prints were found
00:14:50
then he placed the jacket in a special
00:14:53
cabinet with a small container of
00:14:55
cyanoacrylate a compound found in super
00:14:59
glue
00:15:00
the compound was heated and the fumes
00:15:03
circulated around the jacket for about
00:15:05
10 minutes
00:15:07
the cyanoacrylate has made kind of a
00:15:09
little fibrous network over those fumes
00:15:11
and we can look at it it makes the
00:15:12
ridges stand out white instead of the
00:15:15
black like you'd see on a fingerprint
00:15:16
card
00:15:19
to his surprise
00:15:20
bessman found a partial image of a foot
00:15:24
impression
00:15:27
the print was dyed to fluoresce under
00:15:30
forensic lighting
00:15:33
bessman compared that print to the souls
00:15:36
on the shoes confiscated from john
00:15:38
memmer when he was taken into custody
00:15:41
both prints were the same size and make
00:15:45
there had to have been a contaminant on
00:15:46
the shoe or something on the coat that
00:15:48
the shoe removed when it made contact
00:15:50
with it so it was
00:15:53
rather unusual to develop a footwear
00:15:54
impression this way
00:15:56
and there was something else on the shoe
00:15:59
a tiny piece of evidence that would tell
00:16:01
investigators exactly what happened to
00:16:05
laura dalton
00:16:06
and maria laner
00:16:07
[Music]
00:16:12
investigators found
00:16:14
one last piece of evidence linking john
00:16:17
memmer to the murders of laura watson
00:16:20
dalton
00:16:21
and maria laner
00:16:24
it was a tiny piece of material on
00:16:26
memr's shoes
00:16:28
on the side of the sole about the size
00:16:30
of a pinhead kind of a reddish brown
00:16:32
stain that i believe might have been
00:16:34
blood the stain
00:16:37
was lifted using sterile water
00:16:40
then tested using dna analysis
00:16:44
the dna from the blood on the shoe
00:16:47
matched the dna sample from maria laner
00:16:51
it just made it
00:16:52
just more sad because
00:16:55
you kind of knew what he had to do
00:16:58
to get blood out of his shoes
00:17:03
that was critical
00:17:04
it showed that john memmer
00:17:07
had been in contact with maria laner
00:17:09
even though he denied it
00:17:11
and that at some point he was
00:17:14
with maria laner when she was bleeding
00:17:17
john memmer was charged with first
00:17:20
degree murder
00:17:22
we had other

forensic evidence the jacket the
00:17:25
footwear
00:17:27
analysis the eyeglasses but it was the
00:17:29
dna analysis that found maria's blood on
00:17:32
memory shoe that was the final
00:17:35
straw that let us go forward
00:17:39
prosecutors believe john memmer broke
00:17:41
into the apartment when he knew the
00:17:43
tenants were out of town
00:17:47
how he lured laura dalton to the
00:17:49
apartment on wednesday evening isn't
00:17:52
clear
00:17:53
but prosecutors believe member may have
00:17:55
made a sexual advance which was rejected
00:17:59
[Music]
00:18:00
in a rage
00:18:02
memor killed laura with a blow to the
00:18:05
head
00:18:11
on thursday night
00:18:13
memor probably lured maria laner to the
00:18:15
apartment the same way
00:18:17
and when she too rejected him he killed
00:18:20
her as well
00:18:26
on friday after stealing the television
00:18:28
and stereo
00:18:30
memr decided to destroy all possible
00:18:33
evidence that he had been there
00:18:36
he lit a single match for a cigarette
00:18:38
then set about the process of pouring
00:18:41
gasoline throughout the apartment but
00:18:44
he made a mistake
00:18:46
the gasoline caused fumes to build in
00:18:48
the small apartment
00:18:50
and his cigarette caused the explosion
00:18:55
it knocked his glasses off burned his
00:18:57
nose and the cigarette butt and matches
00:19:00
went flying
00:19:02
that was probably
00:19:03
john memmer's downfall was just smoking
00:19:06
the cigarette because he left behind
00:19:07
valuable
00:19:08
evidence and
00:19:10
nearly killed himself
00:19:12
a waste
00:19:14
he's a waste of human being
00:19:17
soulless um
00:19:20
i don't think probably ever contributed
00:19:21
anything
00:19:23
and as a probably has spent all of his
00:19:25
life using people in and taking
00:19:30
at the trial
00:19:31
it wasn't just the forensic evidence
00:19:33
that made an impression on the jury
00:19:36
member was sporting a new tattoo as he
00:19:39
sat at the defense table
00:19:41
in the gang world
00:19:43
a tattoo of a teardrop signifies you've
00:19:47
murdered someone
00:19:50
in this case that was significant
00:19:53
because john member did not want one
00:19:55
teardrop
00:19:56
at the corner of his eye but he wanted
00:19:58
to
00:19:58
[Music]
00:20:00
talk about
00:20:01
not very smart
00:20:03
going
00:20:04
to the trial with those on his eyes and
00:20:07
the jury can see it easily
00:20:10
when i questioned him about that at
00:20:12
trial he claimed they were for two
00:20:15
friends of his
00:20:16
that had died in an automobile accident
00:20:19
but i think that was pretty powerful
00:20:21
damning evidence
00:20:23
in truth in the aggregate it was a small
00:20:26
piece of circumstantial evidence but
00:20:29
it was an interesting addition to the
00:20:31
totality of the case
00:20:34
john memmer was convicted of two counts
00:20:37
of first-degree murder
00:20:39
and was sentenced to life in prison
00:20:43
maria laner's family says
00:20:45
it's ironic
00:20:46
that science helped find her killer
00:20:50
she was a biology major she loved
00:20:52
science
00:20:54
so knowing that
00:20:56
the blood on the shoe and all the other
00:20:58
forensic evidence was what put him away
00:21:01
i'm sure she would would have thought
00:21:02
that was pretty cool
00:21:05
there is no such thing as a perfect
00:21:06
crime there's always evidence left it's
00:21:08
there for the people who look this was
00:21:11
where the evidence led and it pointed to
00:21:13
mr mimmer
00:21:15
he received two life sentences
00:21:17
john memmer will obviously serve one of
00:21:20
his life sentences
00:21:21
here
00:21:23
on this earth
00:21:25
if i was john memor i would be worrying
00:21:27
about where i'm going to spend that
00:21:28
second life sentence
00:21:30
it may be a lot hotter there than
00:21:33
the fire that he started
