the summer of 2003
00:02:08
this quiet community was rattled at 403

wound to the chest
00:02:38
inside a nearby apartment jennifer
00:02:40
harris a 39 year old ice cream truck
00:02:42
driver
00:02:43
was waiting for police she told me she
00:02:45
found some documentation that
00:02:47
her boyfriend who she knew as mamadou
00:02:49
bala with somebody else
00:02:51
and she confronts him about these papers
00:02:54
according to jennifer he hits her on her
00:02:56
head
00:02:57
at that moment i knew that he was going
00:02:59
to try and kill me
00:03:00
i got my gun out of my purse i
00:03:04
told him that the gun was cocked and
00:03:06
loaded and that
00:03:07
he should leave jennifer said that mr
00:03:09
balo went for the gun
00:03:11

mama duballo a bus driver and african
00:03:18
immigrant
00:03:19
was rushed to the hospital and
00:03:20
miraculously survived
00:03:22
to tell his story he told the police how
00:03:25
jennifer was waiting in the bedroom for
00:03:27
him with a loaded gun
00:03:28
this was not the first time jennifer had
00:03:30
been involved in a shooting jennifer
00:03:31
harris
00:03:32
had shot a prior boyfriend she said that
00:03:35
she was advised by somebody
00:03:37
that the next time you shoot your
00:03:40
partner
00:03:41
you should do so to kill i didn't
00:03:43
attempt to kill mama dude
00:03:45
all i wanted to do was get mama out of
00:03:47
my house
00:03:50
one of five children jennifer diane
00:03:52
harris was born to a middle-class family
00:03:54
in las vegas nevada
00:03:56
on march 19 1964.
00:03:59
i had a wonderful childhood when it came
00:04:02
to
00:04:02
financial substance we didn't like any
00:04:05
their house was like
00:04:06
the cool house but tragedy struck
00:04:10
when jennifer's father committed suicide
00:04:12
she was seven years old
00:04:14
[Music]
00:04:16
it was truly traumatized and
00:04:17
overwhelming and i still think about it
00:04:20
at age 14 jennifer got pregnant and gave
00:04:24
birth to daughter antoinette
00:04:26
i was always told my mom was a little
00:04:28
fast i actually really
00:04:30
don't know who my biological father is
00:04:33
the single mom dropped out of high
00:04:34
school
00:04:35
and played the field by age 21 she had
00:04:38
two more children
00:04:40
and countless ex-boyfriends i was a
00:04:42
habitual fornicator
00:04:44
i enjoyed sex and so i would normally
00:04:46
have more than one boyfriend
00:04:48
she's materialistic you don't have money
00:04:50
you have any issues take care of my kids
00:04:52
you're out
00:04:56
on the prowl for men willing to part
00:04:58
with their money
00:04:59
jennifer got hired as a blackjack dealer
00:05:01
on the vegas strip
00:05:03
on my breaks i would go and play the
00:05:05
machines and i would hit
00:05:07
jackpots she won 28
00:05:10
000 playing keno so from there she
00:05:13
considered herself a professional
00:05:14
gambler despite hitting the jackpot at
00:05:17
work
00:05:17
jennifer's home life was a complete bust
00:05:20
she had a lot of
00:05:22
violent relationships i don't know if
00:05:25
it's
00:05:25
my mom violent or just the men she ran
00:05:28
across were violent
00:05:30
mom could be sweet and she could be
00:05:33
somebody you don't want to cross in 1986
00:05:37
22 year old jennifer dated auto mechanic
00:05:40
eddie jones
00:05:41
despite a 20-year age difference they
00:05:44
met at the casino
00:05:45
and hit it off their relationship
00:05:48
was violent from the beginning
00:05:57
when antoinette revealed to her mom that
00:05:59
eddie had allegedly been inappropriate
00:06:01
with her
00:06:02
jennifer took matters into her own hands
00:06:04
eddie said some perverse
00:06:06
things to her i said let me show you
00:06:08
dear what i'm going to do to a pervert
00:06:09
and i put her in the car with me i just
00:06:12
remember just
00:06:13
she just pressed on the gas and we just
00:06:15
hit him
00:06:16
i went and i ran him over
00:06:20
eddie suffered a broken leg but didn't
00:06:22
press charges
00:06:24
days later the dysfunctional couple
00:06:26
reconciled
00:06:27
i felt really bad i would help him clean
00:06:30
his house
00:06:30
have oral sex with him if he needed it
00:06:33
whatever
00:06:34
he knew how to get to my mom money
00:06:37
for years the violence between jennifer
00:06:39
and eddie continued to escalate
00:06:41
until one tumultuous night in 1988.
00:06:44
he was drunk he was belligerent that's
00:06:47
when he hit me in the leg
00:06:49
according to jennifer the blow to her
00:06:51
knee landed her in the hospital
00:06:53
she turned to an ex-boyfriend for
00:06:55
protection he brought with him
00:06:57
his nine-millimeter gun eddie called and
00:07:00
said he was going to come over and
00:07:01
finish what he started
00:07:03
then eddie was aiming on the door 15
00:07:05
minutes later i got his 9 millimeter
00:07:08
cracked door and pointed the gun at
00:07:11
eddie's kneecap she aimed and fired the
00:07:13
boy
00:07:14
i barely touched that trigger and it
00:07:18
went off once again eddie jones refused
00:07:21
to press charges
00:07:23
although jennifer could have faced
00:07:24
attempted murder she pled the case down
00:07:26
to a misdemeanor
00:07:28
eddie jones did not want her prosecuted
00:07:30
he loved jennifer
00:07:31
it was almost like a slap on the hand
00:07:33
maybe a week in jail and she was out
00:07:36
eddie stopped hitting me
00:07:39
i mean that sobered him up
00:07:43
coming up an ice cream truck driver
00:07:47
becomes a cold-blooded shooter
00:07:49
she was pointing the gun at him telling
00:07:51
him that he was a liar that she was
00:07:53
going to kill him
00:07:54
as far as i'm concerned i had the right
00:07:55
to bear arms and later
00:07:58
murder in paradise melissa is a
00:08:00
manipulator
00:08:01
and she was playing two sides
00:08:08
by august of 1998 34 year old jennifer
00:08:11
harris had been in numerous abusive
00:08:13
relationships
00:08:15
but jennifer gave as good as she got
00:08:17
when she shot boyfriend eddie jones in
00:08:19
the kneecap
00:08:20
and claimed self-defense despite their
00:08:22
violent past
00:08:24
eddie still refused to press charges i
00:08:26
never handled a gun
00:08:28
shot a gun i didn't know just barely
00:08:30
touching a trigger it would go off and
00:08:31
it did
00:08:33
it really did i went to jail for five
00:08:36
days
00:08:36
they eventually dismissed the charges
00:08:39
ready for a change
00:08:41
jennifer left her grown children and
00:08:42
decided to follow her latest flame to
00:08:44
aurora colorado
00:08:46
but like most of her relationships it
00:08:49
soon fizzled
00:08:52
she began working at a local bus company
00:08:54
and later purchased an ice cream truck
00:08:56
for additional income the ice cream
00:08:59
truck was awesome
00:09:00
i sold over 70 novelties in the certain
00:09:03
neighborhoods they were waiting for my
00:09:05
mom to come
00:09:06
and they'd be miss jenny in april 2000
00:09:10
jennifer met fellow bus driver 52 year
00:09:12
old mama duvallo
00:09:14
an immigrant from africa's ivory coast
00:09:16
who sweet talked her
00:09:18
he was telling me how beautiful i was
00:09:20
and he just wanted me to shake his
00:09:22
hand well i eventually moved in with him
00:09:25
they seemed very very very close but
00:09:27
within a couple years
00:09:28
according to jennifer the relationship
00:09:34
changed
00:09:36
[Music]
00:09:39
he hit me in the back of the head let me
00:09:42
i
00:09:43
fought back with him i ended up going to
00:09:45
jail she portrayed herself as a victim
00:09:47
of domestic violence
00:09:49
but what the criminal record shows was
00:09:51
that she was actually the perpetrator of
00:09:53
domestic violence
00:09:55
the prosecution would later contend that
00:09:57
jennifer became aggressive
00:09:58
when she suspected mamadou was cheating
00:10:01
she had found him having contact with
00:10:03
this other woman
00:10:04
she was intensely jealous but what
00:10:07
jennifer discovered didn't involve
00:10:09
another woman
00:10:10
it involved another identity here right
00:10:13
on the top is
00:10:14
documents showing that he's someone else
00:10:16
his age was different
00:10:18
his date of birth was different
00:10:20
according to the prosecution
00:10:22
the deception sent jennifer harris into
00:10:24
a rage
00:10:25
she put a deadly plan into action
00:10:34
she hid her ice cream truck so he
00:10:36
wouldn't know
00:10:37
that she was home jennifer was sitting
00:10:40
there on the bed waiting for him
00:10:42
with a loaded 38 caliber handgun
00:10:46
she trained the gun directly at him and
00:10:49
said
00:10:50
today you're going to die
00:10:53
then she ordered him to the floor
00:10:56
pointing the gun at him
00:10:58
telling him that he was a liar telling
00:11:00
him that she was going to kill him
00:11:02
and he was trying to escape she aimed
00:11:05
directly at his heart
00:11:08
she pulled the trigger
00:11:12
but because he was in the process of
00:11:14
getting up off the floor
00:11:16
it changed the trajectory of the bullet
00:11:18
[Music]
00:11:20
jennifer argues that she never intended
00:11:22
to shoot mamadou
00:11:24
in fact she claims he was attacking her
00:11:26
when the gun
00:11:27
accidentally discharged he called me a
00:11:30
female dog
00:11:31
and punched me in the temporal bone i
00:11:34
knew that he would probably kill me
00:11:36
so as far as i'm concerned i had the
00:11:37
right to bear arms mama do tries to get
00:11:40
the gun from her
00:11:41
they end up in a struggle he bit me here
00:11:43
and then he finally got a good grip
00:11:45
right there
00:11:46
so he's biting me and we're both holding
00:11:49
the gun
00:11:50
and the gun went off
00:11:53
i didn't pull the trigger i never put my
00:11:56
finger on the trigger
00:12:00
despite being shot in the chest mamadou
00:12:03
wrestled the gun
00:12:03
away from jennifer and stumbled outside
00:12:06
the house
00:12:07
i heard a noise that sounded like a
00:12:09
firecracker
00:12:11
i looked out and there was a gentleman
00:12:13
he just laid down
00:12:14
i just ran upstairs and called 9-1-1
00:12:17
paramedics rushed mamadou to the
00:12:18
hospital
00:12:19
where he spent a week in intensive care
00:12:22
mamadou balo should have died in this
00:12:24
case
00:12:24
if it wasn't for the fact that he was
00:12:26
able to get out of that apartment and
00:12:28
get immediate
00:12:29
medical attention mamadou told
00:12:31
authorities that jennifer was trying to
00:12:33
kill him
00:12:33
and that he only fought back after being
00:12:35
shot immediately
00:12:37
jennifer was picked up for questioning i
00:12:39
just wanted to get the [ __ ] out of my
00:12:41
house
00:12:42
i don't know how the gun went off i
00:12:44
don't know if it was me
00:12:46
or if he hit the trigger she was very
00:12:48
insistent there was a struggle over the
00:12:49
gun
00:12:50
she didn't mean to shoot mama do things
00:12:53
that she said
00:12:53
led me to believe that she was not being
00:12:56
truthful
00:12:56
the ballistics expert was able to
00:12:58
determine that gun had to be
00:13:00
fired at least three feet away from
00:13:02
mamadou if they were tussling over the
00:13:04
gun
00:13:04
it would be difficult for it to be more
00:13:06
than three feet away from mamadou
00:13:08
authorities charged jennifer with
00:13:10
attempted first-degree murder
00:13:12
with mamadou's testimony and the
00:13:13
ballistics report prosecutors felt they
00:13:16
had a strong case against jennifer
00:13:17
harris
00:13:19
but suddenly the star witness for the
00:13:21
prosecution had a change of heart
00:13:23
by the time we went to trial mamadou
00:13:25
didn't want to prosecute
00:13:27
he actually still loved jennifer during
00:13:29
trial he told him that he lied
00:13:31
he just kept saying to us i don't want
00:13:33
jennifer to go to jail i want her to
00:13:35
come home
00:13:36
which is typical in domestic violence
00:13:37
cases you often find that victims
00:13:40
recant their testimony part of it is
00:13:43
the psychological power that the
00:13:45
perpetrator has over the victim what she
00:13:48
didn't anticipate was that we had
00:13:50
the forensic evidence to prove both her
00:13:52
story and mamadou's story weren't true
00:13:54
i prayed that the truth would come out
00:13:56
and that i would be vindicated
00:14:08
i thought i was going to have a heart
00:14:09
attack i literally thought i was going
00:14:11
to die
00:14:12
in july 2007 jennifer's case was
00:14:15
reversed on a technicality
00:14:17
she was tried again and convicted a
00:14:19
second time
00:14:20
her sentence was reduced to 38 years
00:14:23
mamadou did admit to taking on a false
00:14:26
identity
00:14:26
he was not charged with any crime
00:14:29
jennifer harris is serving out her
00:14:31
sentence at the women's correctional
00:14:32
facility
00:14:33
in denver colorado coming to prison is
00:14:36
like
00:14:36
wandering in a wilderness the
00:14:40
responsibility i take is that
00:14:42
maybe i was a busy body going in his
00:14:44
duffel bag
00:14:45
i don't think anyone can attempt to kill
00:14:47
anyone if you want to kill someone you
00:14:48
can kill someone
00:14:51
coming up a love triangle
00:14:54
ends in a murder he just went psycho and
00:14:57
it
00:14:58
starts screaming lindsay has a mach 10
00:15:01
holds that
00:15:02
gun high up like he's in a movie and
00:15:04
unloads a barrage of fire
00:15:11
the local girl got tied into this love
00:15:13
triangle
00:15:15
it was going to be a rip-off it was
00:15:16
going to be drugs and money i just never
00:15:18
thought that they would have gone that
00:15:20
extreme
00:15:21
and killed him melissa set all these
00:15:24
chain of events
00:15:25
into action she's a snake and she set
00:15:27
them up

[Music]
00:15:31
my name is melissa ordonez i was
00:15:34
convicted of
00:15:35
accessory to burglary robbery and
00:15:38
kidnapping i was sentenced to a 10-year
00:15:41
prison term
00:15:48
it was a typical quiet monday night in
00:15:50
the tropical community of kaneohe hawaii
00:15:53
long-time resident anne bauer was
00:15:55
sitting down to watch the 10 o'clock
00:15:57
news
00:15:58
when gunshots pierced through the warm
00:16:00
evening breeze
00:16:01
i heard a pop-up pop and saw a figure
00:16:05
firing a gun so i called 9-1-1 suddenly
00:16:08
anne had a front-row seat to a breaking
00:16:11
news story that was unfolding behind her
00:16:13
home
00:16:14
she had no idea she had witnessed a
00:16:16
crime that would make
00:16:17
front page headlines in oahu for months
00:16:20
to come
00:16:20
witnesses say it sounded like a war zone
00:16:23
30 rounds fired
00:16:24
in front of passing cars it was just the
00:16:27
most cold and calculated murder i've
00:16:29
ever
00:16:30
seen in hawaii the victim
00:16:33
27 year old benjamin graheda was
00:16:35
allegedly a drug dealer from north
00:16:37
hollywood california
00:16:38
he had been blasted 16 times with a mac
00:16:42
10.
00:16:42
grajeda's body was covered in tattoos
00:16:45
but you could see
00:16:46
the bullet holes i mean it was like it
00:16:48
was riddled
00:16:50
authorities arrested 26 year old jericho
00:16:52
lindsay
00:16:53
and 35 year old william freeman longtime
00:16:56
friends from alabama
00:16:57
mr freeman was the first person they
00:16:59
caught as he was placed in custody the
00:17:02
first words out of his mouth was
00:17:04
all this over a girl the girl in
00:17:07
question
00:17:08
was 21 year old melissa ordonez a local
00:17:11
college student with a checkered past
00:17:13
detectives soon discovered the seductive
00:17:15
beauty was at the core of a deadly love
00:17:17
triangle
00:17:18
involving the shooter jericho lindsay
00:17:20
and the victim
00:17:21
benjamin grahada authorities believe
00:17:24
melissa was also the mastermind behind a
00:17:26
four-person scheme
00:17:28
to rob rajeta of 50 000 in cash
00:17:31
as well as his cocaine stash melissa
00:17:35
set the whole thing up gave him
00:17:36
information about the drugs
00:17:38
and the money she's used to the high
00:17:41
life
00:17:42
she saw an opportunity to get more and
00:17:44
took it

00:17:51
born to teenage parents on september 27
00:17:54
1985
00:17:55
melissa ann ordonez was raised by her
00:17:57
grandmother
00:17:58
in central maui i felt really hurt and
00:18:02
abandoned and even though my grandmother
00:18:04
was loving me
00:18:05
she wasn't my mother but growing up in
00:18:08
the sunny tropics wasn't just about
00:18:10
luaus and surfing hawaii is also a drug
00:18:13
trafficker's paradise
00:18:14
ranking fifth in the nation for its
00:18:16
local's use of methamphetamines
00:18:18
known here by its street name ice eighth
00:18:22
grade
00:18:22
i started using crystal meth
00:18:25
marijuana started smoking cigarettes
00:18:28
drinking alcohol
00:18:29
she knew the effects of drugs but it was
00:18:31
part of her life i became addicted to
00:18:33
crystal meth it just gave me this
00:18:36
powerful feeling
00:18:38
the fast life caught up with the 19 year
00:18:40
old in september 2004
00:18:42
when federal agents closed in on a maui
00:18:44
drug ring
00:18:45
authorities seized two pounds of meth
00:18:47
and 250
00:18:48
000 in cash the bust resulted in the
00:18:51
arrest of 13 suspects
00:18:53
including melissa ordonez i've only
00:18:56
known
00:18:57
one guy out of the whole ring
00:19:00
and the feds caught me and him
00:19:04
talking about drugs the feds charged
00:19:07
melissa with conspiracy to possess
00:19:09
and to distribute ice she got lucky and
00:19:12
walked away with just
00:19:13
three years probation the original
00:19:16
charge carried a 10-year mandatory
00:19:17
minimum
00:19:18
and the judge gave her one day time
00:19:20
served so this was one of the
00:19:22
great breaks of all time i thought that
00:19:24
would have been a wake-up call
00:19:26
so i moved away from maui to change my
00:19:28
life
00:19:29
melissa says she gave up drugs moved to
00:19:32
oahu and enrolled at the university of
00:19:34
hawaii
00:19:35
but there was one boyfriend she
00:19:37
continued dating jericho lindsay
00:19:39
a 26 year old suspected murderer from
00:19:42
alabama
00:19:43
he showered melissa with gifts he'd take
00:19:45
me shopping
00:19:46
spend five thousand dollars on me at a
00:19:49
time i loved it
00:19:50
mr lindsay had two friends who had
00:19:53
suggested the idea
00:19:54
of ripping off drug dealers and so if
00:19:57
melissa seemed to be following that
00:19:59
trail of drugs and money
00:20:02
this guy was cold his eyes were cold
00:20:06
his thoughts were cold and the guy would
00:20:08
take you out in a heartbeat
00:20:10
the couple had been dating for about
00:20:11
eight months when 27 year old benjamin
00:20:13
grahada came along
00:20:15
melissa says she called jurico and told
00:20:18
him it was over
00:20:19
i met benjamin one night after clubbing
00:20:22
i've only known him for about two weeks
00:20:26
and i started dating him
00:20:29
benjamin grahada told melissa he owned
00:20:31
an electronics store on the mainland
00:20:33
but police claimed that was a cover for
00:20:35
being a drug dealer
00:20:36
he's actually part of a hispanic
00:20:40
gang out of east l.a he came over here
00:20:43
posing as a musician
00:20:44
i assumed by his tattoos he had a
00:20:48
criminal history but he came off very
00:20:51
harmless
00:20:52
detective cheryl suniyah believes
00:20:54
melissa knew exactly what she was doing
00:20:57
melissa is a manipulator she
00:21:00
is a compulsive liar and she was in
00:21:04
touch with lindsay
00:21:05
she was in touch with grajeda melissa
00:21:08
was playing two sides
00:21:10
as melissa tells it she was only dating
00:21:12
benjamin grajeda
00:21:14
but jericho lindsey had a hard time
00:21:16
letting her go
00:21:17
he came to oahu unexpectedly i wanted to
00:21:20
know why
00:21:21
i was leaving him was crying and telling
00:21:23
me to at least be with him
00:21:25
along for the trip were jericho
00:21:27
lindsay's two friends
00:21:28
35 year old william freeman and 29 year
00:21:32
old reginald pettway
00:21:34
but what allegedly started as a lover's
00:21:36
plea for reconciliation
00:21:37
ended in a violent shootout between
00:21:39
benjamin grajeda
00:21:41
and jericho lindsay she let grajeda know
00:21:44
that lindsay was bothering her
00:21:47
and she's actually with lindsay
00:21:50
in her cadillac and there's a traffic
00:21:54
incident where she jumps out and gets
00:21:57
into the car
00:21:58
with graheda and then lindsay
00:22:01
gets behind the wheel of the cadillac
00:22:03
and rams the back of grajeda's car
00:22:06
also following that is freeman and
00:22:08
pettway
00:22:09
in a hummer so grahada takes out a gun
00:22:13
and fires a few rounds at the hummer
00:22:16
benjamin just went psycho and it starts
00:22:20
screaming
00:22:21
and i'm terrified it was a really bad
00:22:23
meeting because there was going to be a
00:22:24
payback coming up
00:22:27
a vicious shooting on the streets of
00:22:29
paradise
00:22:30
i remember healed and screened melissa
00:22:33
help
00:22:34
and later her and adam had decided they
00:22:37
could lure him to one of the vacant
00:22:38
apartments
00:22:39
and that adam could hit him in the head
00:22:40
with this hammer and
00:22:42
they would rob him
00:22:46
by may 2007 21 year old melissa ordonez
00:22:49
was still on probation
00:22:51
but was partying hard and living large
00:22:53
spoiled by her boyfriend jericho lindsay
00:22:56
but when she took an interest in a new
00:22:58
and richer boyfriend named benjamin
00:23:00
grahada
00:23:01
things turned violent it was just a
00:23:04
strange
00:23:05
coincidence of bad things that lindsay
00:23:08
and
00:23:08
this guy happen to come together in one
00:23:11
of our streets one evening
00:23:12
the rivalry for melissa ordonez between
00:23:15
benjamin grajeda
00:23:16
a suspected drug dealer from california
00:23:18
and jericho lindsay
00:23:20
a murder suspect from alabama became
00:23:22
heated
00:23:23
when a traffic incident escalated into a
00:23:25
shootout on the streets of honolulu
00:23:28
lindsay had told melissa grajeda started
00:23:31
a war
00:23:32
that i'm going to finish as a way to
00:23:35
cover
00:23:35
herself she told mr lindsey well i'm not
00:23:38
really
00:23:39
with mr grejeda i'm just trying to use
00:23:42
him to help you
00:23:43
get the drugs and money that you want
00:23:46
the prosecution believes that melissa
00:23:48
devised a plot
00:23:49
involving jericho lindsay and his
00:23:51
alabama friends to rob her new boyfriend
00:23:54
benjamin grahada melissa had told them
00:23:58
that grajeda had thousands of dollars
00:24:01
hidden in his apartment
00:24:02
and he had drugs so the plan
00:24:06
was that they were going to come to the
00:24:07
house and rob him
00:24:09
melissa adamantly denies masterminding
00:24:11
the plan
00:24:12
she says she was just caught between two
00:24:15
jealous lovers
00:24:16
i never set this whole thing up
00:24:18
everything was just
00:24:19
becoming a total nightmare to me
00:24:29
benjamin asked me to dinner and while i
00:24:32
was eating with him jericho called me
00:24:34
he goes here with the hispanic guy again
00:24:36
call me when you're done with him
00:24:38
and i had this feeling like i wonder if
00:24:41
he's stalking us
00:24:43
but detectives believe that melissa used
00:24:45
the phone call as a ruse
00:24:46
to alert jurico of grajeda's whereabouts
00:24:49
melissa
00:24:50
is planning this whole incident she's
00:24:53
on the phone to lindsay telling them
00:24:57
when they're leaving to go home i sent
00:25:00
benjamin
00:25:01
to the store to get me some personal
00:25:03
belongings according to authorities
00:25:05
this was actually a fool's errand that
00:25:07
started a deadly chain of events
00:25:09
she called lindsay them and told him
00:25:11
that grajeda was gone and lindsay
00:25:14
pettway and freeman they were parked
00:25:16
outside the apartment
00:25:18
so they come in melissa said the money's
00:25:20
in the walls
00:25:21
somewhere so they start pounding the
00:25:23
walls
00:25:24
looking for the um the money and it's
00:25:26
nowhere to be found
00:25:28
in the meantime grajeda comes back and
00:25:30
they just
00:25:31
beat the crap out of him he's a tough
00:25:33
guy but you know after a while they had
00:25:35
him
00:25:35
melissa watched as this was going on
00:25:38
she said hurry do what you're going to
00:25:40
do with grahada but get it done
00:25:42
quick because this is making a lot of
00:25:45
noise
00:25:46
but melissa insists she was caught by
00:25:48
surprise
00:25:49
all of a sudden these men just break
00:25:52
into
00:25:52
the house and there was guns in their
00:25:55
hands
00:25:56
so i saved my own life and i ran out of
00:25:58
there
00:26:00
claiming that she hid behind a bush
00:26:01
outside the apartment
00:26:03
melissa listened while jericho and his
00:26:05
buddies took benjamin grahada down
00:26:08
i just heard them beating him and i
00:26:11
remember he screamed melissa
00:26:12
help and that just
00:26:16
broke my heart the violence escalated
00:26:19
jericho and his crew
00:26:20
gagged grejeda stripped him down to his
00:26:22
boxer shorts tied him up with duct tape
00:26:25
and threw him in the trunk of their car
00:26:27
they drove away
00:26:29
like nothing happened
00:26:32
when the three were on kaneohe bay drive
00:26:35
freeman says he had a change of heart he
00:26:38
popped the trunk
00:26:39
giving rijeda a chance to escape
00:26:43
grajeda jumps out of the back of the
00:26:45
trunk and he starts running
00:26:47
lindsay realizes and he jumps out of the
00:26:51
car with a gun
00:26:52
and he's chasing him down the road in
00:26:55
the middle of traffic
00:26:56
lindsay had a mac 10 semi-automatic mr
00:27:00
lindsey just
00:27:01
holds that gun high up like he's in a
00:27:03
movie
00:27:04
and unloads a barrage of fire
00:27:07
this is cold-blooded ann bauer was just
00:27:10
one of a dozen witnesses that watched
00:27:12
the scene unfold in horror
00:27:14
you could feel like this was not a nice
00:27:16
person there was a calmness and
00:27:18
coldness about it he just kept shooting
00:27:20
and he evidently wanted to be sure
00:27:23
that he was dead autopsy results
00:27:26
revealed that benjamin grahada was shot
00:27:28
16 times
00:27:30
he died at the scene witnesses helped
00:27:33
police track down the suspects within
00:27:35
hours
00:27:37
meanwhile back at grajeda's apartment
00:27:40
melissa tried to disappear
00:27:43
she sneaks out of there and calls a cab
00:27:47
she pays him 200
00:27:50
cash and she tells him you never saw me
00:27:54
she had a big bag with her which mr
00:27:58
lindsay and say
00:27:59
that was the money that belonged to mr
00:28:01
grejeda and to this day we still know
00:28:03
where it is
00:28:04
i believe melissa has it i didn't get
00:28:06
anything
00:28:08
goods money drugs out of the whole
00:28:10
situation
00:28:11
that evening and into the next day
00:28:13
detectives scoured the scene for
00:28:15
evidence
00:28:16
we recovered a rental car key which we
00:28:19
were able to trace back
00:28:21
to grejeda's residence with two crime
00:28:24
scenes
00:28:24
and two suspects in custody it didn't
00:28:26
take long for detectives to piece
00:28:28
together what happened that fateful
00:28:30
night
00:28:31
freeman talks a lot right away he starts
00:28:35
giving us that it's melissa that set the
00:28:38
whole thing up
00:28:39
i believe freeman said that i set it up
00:28:43
to save his own self it took nearly a
00:28:46
year after grajeda's murder
00:28:47
to gather enough evidence to arrest
00:28:49
melissa ordonez
00:28:51
they did so as a result of co-defendant
00:28:53
william freeman's testimony
00:28:55
he was twice given a polygraph test and
00:28:58
had twice
00:28:59
passed based on freeman's credibility
00:29:02
then melissa was charged with the crimes
00:29:05
of
00:29:06
being an accomplice to robbery
00:29:09
kidnapping and burglary i thought oh man
00:29:12
i'm going to be in jail for a very long
00:29:15
time
00:29:23
i apologize to everything that was
00:29:26
affected by it she did get off lightly
00:29:29
but
00:29:31
we had to weigh that against making sure
00:29:33
that we get the real shooter in this
00:29:34
case mr lindsay

00:29:57
she will likely be released in august
00:29:59
2011
00:30:00
she will then serve 18 months in federal
00:30:03
prison for violating her probation on
00:30:05
her original drug
00:30:06
charge it took this for me to realize
00:30:10
that
00:30:11
nothing was free there's always a price
00:30:13
to pay
00:30:14
if i would have called that police it
00:30:16
wouldn't have escalated that far
00:30:18
he wouldn't have died i'm deeply sorry
00:30:20
for what happened
00:30:24

00:30:51
to cover herself if tammy had said i
00:30:54
need five thousand dollars
00:30:55
my dad would have given it just to help
00:30:57
him out
00:30:59
my name is tammy foxx i'm convicted of
00:31:02
murder
00:31:02
and i received 45 years
00:31:07
it was three weeks before christmas and
00:31:09
austin texas was abuzz with the holiday
00:31:11
spirit
00:31:12
but on december 8 1998 while people were
00:31:16
busy shopping
00:31:17
police received a frantic 911 year old
00:31:21
lonnie greenwood
00:31:22
declaring that he had been stabbed
00:31:24
[Music]
00:31:26
i just been stabbed somebody stabbed me
00:31:28
on my car
00:31:29
for ems hold on lonnie was in his
00:31:31
vehicle it was obvious that
00:31:33
he was in extreme pain and was bleeding
00:31:37
pretty heavily
00:31:38
detectives quickly got enough
00:31:40
information from the injured victim
00:31:42
to pick up 23 year old tammy fox a
00:31:44
former stripper
00:31:45
the officers basically told her that
00:31:47
they had information that she was
00:31:48
involved
00:31:49
in the stabbing she started talking
00:31:52
and she didn't quit tammy told
00:31:56
detectives that she and her boyfriend
00:31:58
20-year-old adam bagel had planned to
00:32:00
rob lonnie greenwood
00:32:01
a client who paid her for sex but she
00:32:04
insisted the scheme did not include a
00:32:05
stabbing
00:32:06
she knew greenwood from strip club here
00:32:09
in austin
00:32:09
and it was her and adam's idea they
00:32:12
would rob him
00:32:13
detectives learned that adam had also
00:32:15
known the victim and believed that he
00:32:17
stabbed lonnie greenwood as payback for
00:32:19
firing him
00:32:20
all the evidence pointed to this being
00:32:22
more of his opportunity to get revenge
00:32:24
than to just commit
00:32:25
a robbery tammy thought this as a chance
00:32:28
to make a big score
00:32:29
i don't think she ever anticipated that
00:32:30
adam bagel would try to kill him
00:32:32
[Music]
00:32:34
tammy fox was born in 1975 at age three
00:32:38
her parents separated
00:32:39
and tammy and her brother were taken in
00:32:41
by her grandmother
00:32:43
by age 14 she was pregnant and married
00:32:45
in a shotgun wedding to a 21 year old
00:32:48
mom and my grandmother all decided that
00:32:51
it was the right thing for us to get
00:32:53
married
00:32:53
and i didn't want to but then i was
00:32:55
talked into doing it
00:32:56
but according to tammy she and her new
00:32:58
husband did not live
00:33:00
happily ever after he was very abusive
00:33:03
he finally left tammy was abandoned
00:33:06
but quickly sought love wherever she
00:33:08
could find it
00:33:10
by the time she was in her early
00:33:11
twenties she had countless boyfriends
00:33:13
and had given birth to six children it
00:33:16
was only a matter of time
00:33:18
until child protective services would
00:33:20
take them all away
00:33:22
she had a history of alcohol abuse drug
00:33:24
abuse a history of being sexually abused
00:33:27
as a child her main employment was
00:33:29
working at
00:33:30
strip club i had advances topless
00:33:33
dancing
00:33:34
so to strip down table dancing and stuff
00:33:36
like that
00:33:37
it was a lot of fun it was easy money
00:33:40
while dancing at a local strip club
00:33:42
tammy met a businessman
00:33:44
named lonnie greenwood my dad was very
00:33:47
social
00:33:48
he always had lots of friends always
00:33:51
going out doing things he was able to
00:33:54
open a small car lot
00:33:56
he presented himself as a family man
00:33:58
businessman during the week
00:34:01
but he had his vices also and i think
00:34:05
drinking and
00:34:06
strippers were probably his advice i
00:34:08
didn't know about
00:34:09
tammy specifically but i knew that my
00:34:12
dad
00:34:13
probably had relationships according to
00:34:15
tammy
00:34:16
she and lonnie had instant chemistry i
00:34:18
walked up to lonnie and i just asked him
00:34:20
if he wanted to dance
00:34:21
we were drinking and everything and he
00:34:23
mentioned that he would like to
00:34:24
take the party out afterwards lonnie
00:34:28
owns a yacht
00:34:29
and we had sex and drank and we just
00:34:32
kicked off from there lonnie treated
00:34:34
tammy well
00:34:35
and they continued to see each other on
00:34:37
a casual basis
00:34:38
he gave her money and helped her with
00:34:40
bills and stuff and she was on friendly
00:34:41
turns with him
00:34:42
he was lovable and very caring
00:34:46
but in october of 1998 23 year old tammy
00:34:50
hit an all-time low
00:34:51
after i lost custody of my last two
00:34:53
children i went to
00:34:54
self-destruction depression i was
00:34:57
introduced to ecstasy
00:34:59
started taking speed after getting
00:35:01
suspended from her job at the strip club
00:35:03
she met twenty-year-old adam bagel a
00:35:05
drug dealer
00:35:06
who eased her pain with more speed and
00:35:08
coke bannon memphis is a
00:35:10
fast-food restaurant started lacking
00:35:12
each other so we end up getting together
00:35:14
and dating i was doing drugs she was
00:35:16
doing drugs too so we just
00:35:18
hung out but adam claimed he had heard
00:35:21
about tammy from a conversation he'd had
00:35:23
with
00:35:24
of all people lonnie greenwood the weird
00:35:27
thing is
00:35:27
i knew about her before i met her
00:35:29
because i'd heard lonnie talking about
00:35:31
tammy
00:35:32
coincidentally lonnie knew adam since he
00:35:34
was a boy
00:35:35
he was an associate with my father they
00:35:37
had a couple different businesses
00:35:39
together
00:35:40
she's like all right god but police
00:35:43
argue that adam harbored a deep-seated
00:35:45
resentment towards lonnie greenwood
00:35:47
and that it eventually led to his murder
00:35:50
mr greenwood
00:35:51
owned a card lot with adam bagel's
00:35:54
father
00:35:55
and at some point adam had worked there
00:35:57
apparently he was not a very good
00:35:58
employee
00:35:59
and mr greenwood finally had to fire him
00:36:01
from his job there
00:36:02
and apparently adam baker was very upset
00:36:04
about that coming up
00:36:07
an appointment for sex ends in murder
00:36:11
adam rushes mr greenwood she hears mr
00:36:13
greenwood say
00:36:14
well you don't need to cut me adam bagel
00:36:16
at that point is attacking him with the
00:36:17
knife
00:36:24
by the fall of 1998 23 year old stripper
00:36:28
tammy foxx had relinquished her six
00:36:30
children to the state of texas
00:36:32
depressed and unemployed she comforted
00:36:34
herself with drugs
00:36:35
and sex from 20 year old adam bagel a
00:36:38
drug dealer
00:36:39
to make ends meet tammy also traded sex
00:36:41
for money with men she met at a strip
00:36:43
club
00:36:44
but on one november night tammy says she
00:36:47
was robbed of
00:36:48
everything she owned my sister had a guy
00:36:51
that was staying with her
00:36:53
this guy sold everything from us my car
00:36:56
clothes money everything i owned was in
00:36:58
my car
00:36:59
desperate she begged her boss to
00:37:01
reinstate her job at the strip club
00:37:03
when he refused tammy says she called
00:37:05
her regulars
00:37:06
to earn some fast cash she set up a
00:37:09
tryst with 51 year old lonnie greenwood
00:37:11
a real estate salesman she had done
00:37:14
these dances for him
00:37:15
in the past and she knew that he carried
00:37:17
a lot of money
00:37:19
but the rendezvous with lonnie greenwood
00:37:21
would soon turn into something more
00:37:23
when tammy's drug dealer boyfriend adam
00:37:25
bagel proposed they rob him
00:37:27
the whole purpose was to get the money
00:37:30
to buy drugs
00:37:31
adam brought the fact that we ought to
00:37:32
rob this guy he goes
00:37:34
my dad's got this business partner we
00:37:36
could rob him he always got all kinds of
00:37:38
money on him i was like whatever
00:37:39
and it come out to where his business
00:37:42
partner
00:37:42
is mining
00:37:47
the plan was for tammy to meet lonnie at
00:37:49
a vacant apartment
00:37:50
located in a complex where her mother
00:37:52
lived her and adam had decided they
00:37:54
could lure him to one of the vacant
00:37:55
apartments
00:37:56
and that adam could hit him in the head
00:37:58
with this hammer and
00:37:59
they would rob me well adam had a knife
00:38:03
too
00:38:07
i called lonnie i told him that i got a
00:38:09
new apartment and then i
00:38:10
want to come over and have fun celebrate
00:38:12
with me and so
00:38:14
he said okay at 9 00 pm lonnie showed up
00:38:17
for his
00:38:18
evening of fun adam was pied in the
00:38:20
bathroom i was supposed to give lonnie
00:38:22
the tour
00:38:23
but their simple scheme quickly went
00:38:24
awry the
00:38:26
electricity wasn't on when i got him by
00:38:27
the bathroom i was supposed to cough
00:38:29
that was the signal and adam
00:38:31
come out and attack him they went into
00:38:33
the apartment she gave the signal
00:38:35
to adam bagel who was hiding in the
00:38:37
bathroom he comes out and rushes mr
00:38:39
greenwood while
00:38:40
tammy fox goes into a bedroom i walked
00:38:43
into that bedroom
00:38:44
and waited and i could hear them
00:38:46
struggle lana said why are you cutting
00:38:48
me
00:38:48
chris cut me you know what you want my
00:38:50
wallet or something she hears mr
00:38:52
greenwood say
00:38:53
well you don't need to cut me indicating
00:38:55
adam bagel at that point is attacking
00:38:57
him with the knife
00:38:58
that's when i saw adam run by me they
00:39:01
throw the knife out the
00:39:02
window there at the apartment and then
00:39:04
they then leave and go back to their
00:39:06
apartment in the same complex
00:39:08
tammy and adam fled to her mother's
00:39:10
apartment only to discover that lonnie's
00:39:12
wallet
00:39:12
was empty it dawned on me and he never
00:39:15
paid me out of his wallet he always paid
00:39:16
me out of his pocket
00:39:18
it was all for nothing
00:39:23
adam changed into a pair of shorts she
00:39:26
put on a nightgown and they broke
00:39:28
crawled into bed
00:39:29
despite being stabbed lonnie managed to
00:39:31
make it to his car
00:39:33
and called 9-1-1
00:39:34
[Applause]
00:39:36
i just didn't stab somebody stabbed me i
00:39:38
heard that
00:39:39
i was set up on my car
00:39:43
he was in extreme pain and was bleeding
00:39:46
pretty heavily
00:39:47
it didn't take long for police to
00:39:48
identify tammy and adam as the culprits
00:39:51
mr greenwood told them that this person
00:39:53
from this strip club took me to this
00:39:55
apartment where i was robbed and
00:39:56
attacked
00:39:57
they found adam bagel there and they
00:39:59
found tammy fox
00:40:01
the officers were able to search the
00:40:02
department and found evidence they
00:40:04
believed
00:40:04
would link them to the robbery and the
00:40:06
stabbing
00:40:07
and both adam and her were blazed out on
00:40:09
her wrist at that point
00:40:11
we were going to take his wallet so then
00:40:13
what happens he walks by the bathroom
00:40:15
and that's when i came out her honesty
00:40:19
early on he'll break the case
00:40:20
i told him where the knife was i told
00:40:22
home where the wallet was
00:40:24
i just spilled it all out to him right
00:40:26
then she gave
00:40:27
clothing with blood on it adam had a
00:40:29
bracelet on
00:40:30
the dna testing lady showed had mr
00:40:33
greenwood's blood on it
00:40:34
but adam denies playing any part in the
00:40:37
robbery or the
00:40:38
stabbing tammy never told me
00:40:41
about robbing anybody the clothes that
00:40:44
she gave them were women's clothes
00:40:46
they never would have fit me she's lying
00:40:49
she's been lying this whole time
00:40:52
adam admits being at the crime scene but
00:40:54
claims that he came to the location
00:40:56
after lonnie was stabbed as i'm going in
00:41:00
i'm attacked
00:41:01
i find out later on that it was lonnie
00:41:03
so i'm thinking he's probably thinking
00:41:04
that whoever attacked him is probably
00:41:06
coming back for him
00:41:07
since lonnie greenwood was still alive
00:41:10
tammy fox and adam bagel were charged
00:41:12
with robbery
00:41:13
and assault with a deadly weapon
00:41:16
meanwhile
00:41:16
lonnie greenwood was fighting for his
00:41:18
life lonnie's daughter recalls seeing
00:41:20
her dad for the last time
00:41:22
when i got to the hospital he was
00:41:24
already in a coma and we decided as a
00:41:26
family that we would turn
00:41:28
the machines off it was a really
00:41:30
difficult decision
00:41:32
on december 14 six days after he was
00:41:34
attacked
00:41:35
lonnie greenwood died
00:41:42
at adam's trial tammy testified that
00:41:44
adam held a long
00:41:46
time grudge against lonnie greenwood
00:41:48
adam had mentioned that lonnie is
00:41:50
responsible for him getting kicked out
00:41:51
of his house
00:41:52
when he was 12 years old and he'd been
00:41:55
on the streets ever since
00:41:56
when he started stabbing him i think he
00:41:58
started flashing
00:41:59
and he couldn't stop there's
00:42:01
overwhelming evidence
00:42:03
that adam bagel is the one that did the
00:42:05
stabbing i never denied
00:42:06
being there that night but i didn't i
00:42:08
didn't i didn't stab that man
00:42:10
i didn't stab lonnie i wanna adam bagel
00:42:12
had a reason i want to kill mr greenwood
00:42:14
and
00:42:14
only adam bagel had the physical
00:42:18
evidence on his person the bruises to
00:42:20
his hands and face and the
00:42:22
blood stained clothing that indicates he
00:42:24
was intimately involved in this offense
00:42:27
adam bagel was convicted of capital
00:42:29
murder and sentenced to life in prison
00:42:32
all his appeals were denied tammy fox
00:42:35
pled guilty to murder
00:42:36
and received a sentence of 45 years
00:42:39
without her luring him to that room
00:42:42
mr greenwood could very well be alive
00:42:44
today she's not the one that plunged her
00:42:45
life into his abdomen but she created
00:42:48
the circumstances
00:42:49
that allowed that to happen
00:42:53
[Music]
00:42:55
my life was destroyed and my dad lost
00:42:57
his life
00:42:58
i don't think that there's any sentence
00:43:00
that tammy or adam could have gotten
00:43:02
that i would have felt okay about
00:43:04
i've heard that you know tammy says that
00:43:08
she's found religion and prison's been
00:43:10
the best thing that could happen to her
00:43:12
i'm truly envious because
00:43:16
i don't know how to put my life back
00:43:18
together i'm sorry
00:43:19
it wasn't supposed to turn out the way
00:43:21
it did it weren't there
00:43:23
it wasn't worth it at all
