And he said what? No, I need to go. It was whatever Sonia decided. But before leaving for Manila, Larry needed to take one other trip.

Back home. Back to Olympia for the first time in 13 years for a family reunion. It was great. He was very happy to start another chapter in his life without her.

The Bordeaux family lived in Davenport, Iowa, along the Mississippi River, in the very same house where Earl grew up.

Back then, they called him Duke, a handsome, friendly, Midwestern kid. This is his brother, Dennis.

He was the pride of the family. You're a big brother. Yeah. Yep. I looked up to him a lot,

and we were kind of each other's protector. Duke joined the Marines during Vietnam,

but was stationed in the Philippines, where he met a pretty young Filipina named Sonia

who sang at a nightclub near the base. And she was worth writing home about it. Dennis kept the letters.

And it wasn't long before he got a call from Duke. He said that he'd gotten married.

But Dennis couldn't get a passport in time. So Duke went alone. There was a plane change in Hawaii.

and pretty soon they had identified some suspects, brought him in, charged him with murder.

Three of those people, three of those men, were members of Sonia's family. And then two more were picked up,

Sonia did get caught for a couple of her scams, though, was ordered to pay restitution.

And I walked up to him and I told him, you're under arrest. How do you take it? He just kept kind of mumbling to me that I had the wrong person.

Surprise traveled fast to the Thompsons in Lomita. Finding out that they arrested him, completely shocked.
