Melissa Casias Vanishes in Broad Daylight in New Mexico

September 24, 2025 / 13:28

This episode discusses the disappearance of Melissa Casillas from Ta County, New Mexico on June 26, 2025. Key topics include her unusual behavior that day, clues left behind, and the search for answers.

Melissa drove herself and her husband Mark to Los Alamos National Laboratory, but instead of going to work, she left the property shortly after arriving. She sent an email to her workplace claiming she would be late due to an issue with her daughter, which was later found to be untrue.

After dropping off a sandwich to her daughter Sierra, Melissa was last seen walking on State Road 518. A family friend spotted her around 2:18 p.m., and surveillance footage confirmed this sighting. However, she vanished shortly after.

Several clues were discovered, including her locked house with all her belongings inside, factory-reset phones, and a pair of muddy boots with blood near them. Additionally, clothes resembling Melissa's were found along the road.

The episode emphasizes the family's desperation for answers and encourages listeners to share any information regarding Melissa's disappearance.

00:00:00
Melissa Casillas disappeared from Ta
00:00:02
County, New Mexico on June 26th, 2025.
00:00:07
Nothing about that day was normal for
00:00:09
her. And I'm going to break down the
00:00:11
three strangest facts of this case and
00:00:14
the seven clues left behind that might
00:00:16
tell us what happened. And I need you to
00:00:19
spread the word.
00:00:23
Here's
00:00:27
what we know based on police reports
00:00:29
that we obtained. On June 26, 2025,
00:00:32
53-year-old Melissa Casillas drove
00:00:34
herself and her husband Mark to Los
00:00:37
Alamos National Laboratory where they
00:00:39
both worked similar shifts. Video
00:00:41
surveillance shows Melissa arriving at a
00:00:43
guard shack in their white Volkswagen at
00:00:46
6:13 a.m. Now, the normal routine is for
00:00:49
Melissa to drop Mark off at his
00:00:50
building, go to hers, and then pick him
00:00:53
up at the end of the day. But today was
00:00:55
different right from the start. Strange
00:00:58
thing number one. At 6:20 a.m., instead
00:01:00
of going to her scheduled shift,
00:01:02
Melissa's white Volkswagen is seen
00:01:04
leaving the Los Alamos National
00:01:06
Laboratory property. Strange thing
00:01:09
number two, Melissa sends an email to
00:01:11
work saying something came up with her
00:01:13
daughter and she was going to be a
00:01:15
little bit late. But this is bizarre
00:01:18
because there is nothing in the records
00:01:20
that I've seen that would suggest
00:01:22
anything did come up with her daughter
00:01:24
Sierra. She's at home and she wakes up
00:01:26
at around 7:30 a.m. for her own work
00:01:28
shift, surprised to find her mom at the
00:01:31
house. And when she asks why her mom is
00:01:33
home, we get strange thing number three.
00:01:36
Melissa says that she came home because
00:01:38
she forgot her work badge. But this is
00:01:41
also super weird because Mark later
00:01:43
tells police that he saw her hand it to
00:01:45
the security guard at the guard shack.
00:01:48
But at home, Melissa offers to make
00:01:50
Sierra breakfast. And her daughter's
00:01:52
like, "Well, I mean, don't you have to
00:01:53
get back to work?" And she basically
00:01:55
tells her like, "You know what? No, I'm
00:01:57
already late." Plus, Melissa says she
00:01:59
might just stay home the whole day
00:02:01
because she had errands to run. And then
00:02:04
Sierra goes off to work and everything
00:02:06
seems fine. At around 11:00 a.m., Mark
00:02:09
needs their shared car, but he can't
00:02:12
reach his wife on the phone when he
00:02:13
tries to call her. Now, it's unclear why
00:02:15
Melissa wasn't answering his calls at
00:02:17
this time because we know she's
00:02:18
available. We know this because around
00:02:21
lunchtime, Melissa goes to a Subway and
00:02:23
buys a sandwich that she drops off to
00:02:25
her daughter at her work just before
00:02:27
1:00 p.m. Video footage collected by
00:02:29
police that we've obtained confirms that
00:02:31
she was in this area. Now, her daughter
00:02:33
says that they talk and still everything
00:02:37
seems fine. At some point that day, Mark
00:02:39
gets a call from Melissa's supervisor
00:02:42
asking where she is. And Mark says this
00:02:44
is when he first realized that she
00:02:46
wasn't at work. And he becomes concerned
00:02:48
that maybe he doesn't have a ride home,
00:02:51
but he's not overly worried yet. He
00:02:54
contacts their daughter, learns that
00:02:55
Sierra had seen her mom that day, and so
00:02:58
he asked Sierra to see if she can get a
00:02:59
response from Melissa about whether or
00:03:01
not he should catch a ride home with a
00:03:03
friend. Mark tells police that Sierra
00:03:05
said, "Yep, mom says find a ride home."
00:03:08
By 2:34 p.m., any texts going to
00:03:11
Melissa's iPhone aren't being delivered
00:03:14
in the normal way. They're delivered in
00:03:16
a green bubble, not blue, which means
00:03:18
either the phone doesn't have an
00:03:20
internet connection or its iMessage is
00:03:23
disabled. Concerned, Sierra leaves work
00:03:25
and she gets home by 300 p.m. And this
00:03:29
is when things really get weird. When
00:03:31
their daughter gets to the house, she
00:03:32
sees her parents shared Volkswagen in
00:03:35
the driveway and she finds odd clues
00:03:37
left behind in the house. Clue number
00:03:40
one, the door to the house is locked,
00:03:43
but all of Melissa's things are inside,
00:03:46
including her keys. And according to a
00:03:48
police report, they're told no other
00:03:50
keys are missing that could have been
00:03:52
used. Along with her keys and her purse,
00:03:55
her work phone, her personal phone, even
00:03:58
her old phone are all there at the
00:04:00
house. Clue number two, her phones
00:04:02
weren't just left behind. Both of her
00:04:05
personal cell phones had been factory
00:04:08
reset. completely wiped. Now, once Mark
00:04:11
gets home and he sees everything Sierra
00:04:13
found, he calls police to report his
00:04:15
wife missing. And here is part of that
00:04:17
6-minute call.
00:04:20
>> New Mexico State Police.
00:04:23
>> Yeah, this is uh Mark Casillas. Uh you
00:04:26
know what? We're um we cannot locate my
00:04:29
wife. Uh we haven't heard from her all
00:04:32
day
00:04:33
>> and it's this is not like her. She
00:04:35
doesn't do this much less leave with all
00:04:37
her phones and contact people. And I
00:04:39
mean, she even left me walking. Uh,
00:04:41
well, not walking. I had to pick a get a
00:04:43
ride with one of my friends. I'm just
00:04:45
out of it right now. I'm just trying to
00:04:47
figure this out.
00:04:48
>> That's fine. I have an officer on the
00:04:49
way and they're going to go speak with
00:04:50
you. Okay.
00:04:52
>> Okay. Thank you.
00:04:53
>> Mhm. Bye-bye.
00:04:55
>> When police begin taking statements,
00:04:58
they learned that Melissa and Mark were
00:04:59
struggling financially. She and her
00:05:02
husband kept separate accounts. And
00:05:03
though Melissa made about half what Mark
00:05:06
did, she was in charge of paying a lot
00:05:08
of the bills. One of her checking
00:05:10
accounts was overdrawn by about $600 and
00:05:13
they owed back taxes. Actually, that had
00:05:16
recently come to a head because these
00:05:18
money troubles had more than just
00:05:20
financial implications. According to
00:05:22
Melissa's former supervisor, who spoke
00:05:24
to police, this caused Melissa and Mark
00:05:26
to lose their security clearance at
00:05:28
work. Now, it didn't really affect
00:05:30
Mark's role as a superintendent, but
00:05:32
Melissa is an administrative assistant
00:05:34
in a secure building, and when she lost
00:05:36
the clearance, she had to be moved to a
00:05:38
different site.
00:05:40
Not the end of the world, but she was
00:05:42
having performance issues on top of
00:05:44
that. Now, Mark said their marriage was
00:05:46
good. Even the financial stuff was
00:05:48
getting figured out. Melissa had just
00:05:50
told a friend that she was paying the
00:05:52
IRS back. No biggie. Now, Mark gives
00:05:56
permission for police to look around and
00:05:58
take pictures. The house, while
00:06:00
cluttered, doesn't show any signs of a
00:06:02
struggle. Though, there are two things
00:06:04
that stand out in Mark and Melissa's
00:06:07
bedroom. Clue number three. In the
00:06:10
primary bedroom, there are a pair of
00:06:12
boots on the floor in front of a fish
00:06:14
tank. Now, Mark said he hadn't used
00:06:16
those boots in forever. Even mentioned
00:06:18
spiderw webs being on them. But the
00:06:20
officer didn't see any spiderw webs.
00:06:22
What he saw on the boots was mud. The
00:06:25
right boot had dried mud on the sole,
00:06:28
and the mud from the toe area down to
00:06:30
the arch was wet. Clue number four.
00:06:34
Near these boots, they found another
00:06:37
clue. Blood. Now, before you start
00:06:40
jumping to conclusions, thinking
00:06:42
something happened to Melissa in her
00:06:43
home and that she didn't even leave on
00:06:46
her own or willingly, we spoke to the
00:06:48
police and they said the swabs they took
00:06:51
of the blood are out for testing right
00:06:53
now and they don't know yet if it's
00:06:55
human or not. But the blood's not the
00:06:58
only reason for concern. Let me tell you
00:07:01
about the next clue. The last sighting
00:07:03
of Melissa. Clue number five. Once word
00:07:07
gets out that Melissa is missing, a
00:07:09
family friend calls and says that he saw
00:07:11
Melissa the day she disappeared while he
00:07:14
was out on his lunch break. According to
00:07:16
this man's statement, he was driving
00:07:18
east on the way to a pulloff spot where
00:07:21
he sometimes stops to eat his lunch. And
00:07:23
that's when he passed a woman in jeans
00:07:25
and a sweater walking in the same
00:07:27
direction on State Road 518. Now, she
00:07:30
looked familiar this first time he sees
00:07:32
her, but he didn't really think much of
00:07:33
it at the time. When he reaches the
00:07:35
pulloff near Forest Road, he pulls out
00:07:38
to eat his lunch and he calls his son.
00:07:40
This is at 2:19 p.m. And then after he's
00:07:43
called his son, he sees this woman
00:07:45
again. She passes by him walking
00:07:48
briskly, head down. And this is when
00:07:50
he's pretty sure it's Melissa. She's
00:07:53
skinnier than he knew her to be, but we
00:07:55
know from another person who police
00:07:57
interviewed that she'd actually lost a
00:07:58
lot of weight recently since she'd been
00:08:00
put on thyroid medication. Now, this
00:08:02
spot is about a 47minute walk from their
00:08:05
home per Google Maps. So, it wouldn't be
00:08:08
that odd for her to be there, especially
00:08:11
because she was known to take long
00:08:13
walks. And the timing lines up, right?
00:08:15
Like after dropping off the sandwich to
00:08:17
her daughter, she could have gone home,
00:08:19
then set out on that walk and made it to
00:08:20
that spot he sees her at by 219 or so,
00:08:24
right after he calls his son. Now, to be
00:08:26
sure, when this guy finishes his lunch,
00:08:28
he gets back on the road, drives further
00:08:31
east. He sees the woman is still
00:08:33
walking, and when he passes her, this
00:08:35
time he is sure of it. It was Melissa
00:08:38
Casillas. And before you start
00:08:40
questioning the family friend, police
00:08:42
later get surveillance footage from a
00:08:44
house right by where he was eating lunch
00:08:46
that day that shows Melissa walking east
00:08:49
at exactly 2:18 p.m. Now, by the time he
00:08:53
realized that it was her, he couldn't
00:08:55
just stop. He had to keep driving. But
00:08:58
he wanted to stop and talk to her, see
00:08:59
if she needed anything. So, he found a
00:09:02
place to turn around and drove to the
00:09:04
area that he expected her to be at if
00:09:06
she had kept walking in the same
00:09:08
direction. But when he got there, just
00:09:10
moments later, Melissa was gone.
00:09:14
Which brings us to what might be our
00:09:16
next clue. I'm going to call it clue
00:09:18
number six. The man tells police that
00:09:21
where Melissa should have been, he saw a
00:09:24
newer model, maybe like 2020, dark blue
00:09:27
Dodge Ram long bed pickup truck in good
00:09:31
condition with tinted windows. The truck
00:09:33
was gaining speed like it had just been
00:09:36
stopped prior and was driving east on
00:09:38
State Road 518. So, was Melissa walking
00:09:42
away from her life? Did she walk out
00:09:45
there to meet someone who picked her up?
00:09:48
Or was she just going for a long walk
00:09:50
like she was known to do when she was
00:09:52
met with foul play? Now, I think it's
00:09:55
the latter because of the final clue.
00:09:58
When a couple who knows Melissa was out
00:10:00
participating in searches for her, they
00:10:03
found a pile of clothes on the side of
00:10:06
State Road 518 near the Amole Road
00:10:09
intersection. This is a 15-minute drive
00:10:11
from where the blue truck was spotted,
00:10:13
and the clothes are found in the same
00:10:15
direction that it was heading. Now, at
00:10:17
the time, the couple wasn't sure if the
00:10:19
jeans and sweater they had found were
00:10:21
Melissa's. But the woman who found them
00:10:23
said that there was a hair tie, like
00:10:25
cinching the jeans, and that was
00:10:26
something that Melissa was known to do
00:10:28
after she lost weight. Now, police told
00:10:31
us that the items found didn't match the
00:10:33
description of what Melissa was last
00:10:35
seen wearing. So, they told us they
00:10:38
haven't sent the clothes off for any
00:10:39
sort of testing, though, they still
00:10:42
should have them in evidence should
00:10:43
future testing be necessary.
00:10:46
And that's it. There have been no
00:10:49
sightings of Melissa Casillas after 2:18
00:10:52
p.m. on June 26th, 2025,
00:10:56
but we are continuing to report on this.
00:10:58

00:11:00
case coming soon to Crime Junkie

00:11:04

00:11:10
With every day that passes by, her
00:11:12
family grows more and more desperate for
00:11:14
answers. And they actually had a message
00:11:16
for Melissa or anyone who has any
00:11:19
information about her disappearance.
00:11:22
>> I go to bed thinking about her. Wake up
00:11:26
in the middle of the night. Same thing.
00:11:29
Thinking about her. Where is he?
00:11:32
What we would love is if someone out
00:11:36
there knows something to be brave, if
00:11:40
they have any love in their heart to
00:11:42
think what it would be like to go
00:11:45
through something like this and if they
00:11:47
would just think about that of what
00:11:50
we're going through and that they would
00:11:52
please try to have the heart to come
00:11:54
forward and respond.
00:11:57
anything that they would give a tip of
00:12:00
some kind to let us know so that we can
00:12:05
so she can be found. That's all we need.
00:12:08
We need to find her. We need to know
00:12:10
where she's at.
00:12:12
>> She's my little sister. I I need to know
00:12:15
where she's at. I can't stop looking for
00:12:18
her. I won't stop looking for her. She
00:12:21
needs us to find her and bring her home.
00:12:25
Please, if anybody knows a summon out
00:12:28
there, please come forward and uh we
00:12:31
really really appreciate it. Police are
00:12:34
also asking for help. Anyone who lives
