00:00:00
so how did you find yourself in crime
00:00:03
solving law
00:00:05
enforcement okay so it started with Adam
00:00:08
and then I started carrying an anache
00:00:10
case I was a weird kid I watched 60
00:00:12
minutes I was always you know you were
00:00:14
crime junky is what you were I was a
00:00:16
crime junkie as a child yeah it started
00:00:19
early you need children's crime junkie
00:00:20
teachers listen I'm like I needed a
00:00:22
whole like Series yeah and so um I was
00:00:26
interning in homicide and the fact that
00:00:29
I even got the internship is and this is
00:00:31
at the prosecutor's office right yeah
00:00:32
this was at the Amica county attorney's
00:00:34
office and it was interesting because I
00:00:36
knew me getting the job was divine I
00:00:39
knew it was from somewhere else because
00:00:41
I was stuck between do I want to do
00:00:43
divorce custody law or homicide like a
00:00:47
prosecutor and I'm like well as a kid
00:00:49
you know I always wanted to put the bad
00:00:51
guys away but you know I could help kids
00:00:54
in custody situations and have like a
00:00:56
child psychologist on staff and help
00:00:59
them so I was a little torn so I went to
00:01:02
homicide and they all told me no like
00:01:05
everybody in homicide said no they
00:01:08
didn't want they really didn't want me
00:01:09
there the women were kind of mean quite
00:01:11
honestly yeah I mean I was 28 at the
00:01:13
time and they were not liking me being
00:01:16
around and so I'm sitting waiting for my
00:01:19
parking to be validated this man comes
00:01:21
and sits next to me starts talking to me
00:01:23
and he said why are you here and I said
00:01:25
I'm here um for an internship like I
00:01:28
really wanted to see if this this was my
00:01:30
path and he said did they find a place
00:01:33
for you and I said no they told me you
00:01:35
didn't need any he's like don't need any
00:01:38
um he's like I need someone to like
00:01:40
organize my files and help put things
00:01:43
together for court he's like you can be
00:01:45
my intern and I was just like really so
00:01:48
he walks me back through the bullpen of
00:01:52
women on the phone and he's like this is
00:01:54
the new intern this is Alice and DUIs
00:01:58
and I'm just like hi you know who is the
00:02:01
man um I've never I let's just say he
00:02:04
was very high up in his division um he's
00:02:08
retired from there since but although he
00:02:11
met with the producers of medium and
00:02:13
they know who he is I've never outwardly
00:02:16
named him because um I don't want him to
00:02:19
have to answer for my life you know okay
00:02:22
but he knows who he is and he was a he's
00:02:24
still a very good friend important
00:02:27
pivotal in my life um but Glen Karen met
00:02:30
him and so when he made uh man weld uh
00:02:34
his character
00:02:36
Deval around this man okay and his his
00:02:40
Persona so that was pretty great so
00:02:43
anyways it was my job to sort crime
00:02:45
scene photos to go to court and I was
00:02:47
sorting the photos and I was noticing
00:02:49
that I was seeing what was happening in
00:02:51
flashes before the person was killed and
00:02:55
um he was like what's what's wrong cuz I
00:02:58
guess I looked a little troubled and I
00:03:00
said I swear I'm seeing what happened
00:03:02
moments before these people were killed
00:03:05
and he was like that's interesting he
00:03:08
said what are you doing and I said I
00:03:10
feel like maybe I'm getting in the head
00:03:12
of the perpetrator cuz like I know what
00:03:14
the motive is here and he said can you
00:03:17
do that with a jury can you headtap
00:03:20
jurors and I said I've never did he have
00:03:22
any context for you your life or
00:03:24
anything or it was just when you're
00:03:25
looking at these pictures he was
00:03:28
intuitive himself
00:03:30
and he so he believed even though he's
00:03:32
like straight up the best prosecutor
00:03:34
I've seen in my life this commands the
00:03:37
courtroom and so I said I could try so
00:03:41
he sent me to one of the DA's homes and
00:03:43
she had the jury questionnaires so I had
00:03:46
to go through and assem put people on a
00:03:49
jury that the defendants uh Council uh
00:03:54
wouldn't care if we put them on um cuz
00:03:57
they get like a certain amount of
00:03:58
strikes they can strike some of your
00:04:01
people and we can strike some of yours
00:04:03
so I wanted to put people on the jury
00:04:06
for our victim who is raped tortured and
00:04:09
murdered she was an ASU law student that
00:04:12
was my first case um I wanted to
00:04:15
assemble a jury with women who knew what
00:04:17
it was like to be
00:04:19
victimized um women who are raped carry
00:04:23
a victim energy so as I'm looking at the
00:04:26
names on the questionnaires I could feel
00:04:29
the one ones who had been through
00:04:31
something I wanted them on my jury even
00:04:33
though they said they were against the
00:04:35
death penalty because I was pretty sure
00:04:37
we could flip them as soon as they
00:04:39
empathized with our victim and saw the
00:04:41
gravity of the the it was animalistic
00:04:46
what he did to this woman and once they
00:04:49
saw the level of Carnage I figured we
00:04:51
could flip them and it took seven days
00:04:54
and when a jury's out for that long
00:04:56
you're normally going to get a hung jury
00:05:00
or um even a not guilty cuz the one hold
00:05:03
out gives in and um I was taking my kids
00:05:08
to TGI Fridays this on this particular
00:05:11
day and I looked at the TV and it was it
00:05:14
was him it was the man I worked for and
00:05:17
um he was doing a press conference
00:05:19
announcing that we got our guilty
00:05:21
verdict on this man and that was my
00:05:24
first uh case where they brought me into
00:05:26
to do that and he's like I don't know
00:05:28
how you did that um but can you do it
00:05:31
again and the woman the female DA's
00:05:34
house that he took me over to she could
00:05:36
not stand me in court like she didn't
00:05:38
think I should be there she's like I
00:05:40
assembled my own jury he went with yours
00:05:43
instead like she was upset and rightly
00:05:46
so because maybe I wouldn't have been as
00:05:48
accurate and he gambled on me and that's
00:05:50
a big gamble I get that it's been so
00:05:52
many years I feel like I can talk about
00:05:54
this now did she come around she ended
00:05:57
up being one of my best friends get out
00:05:58
of here so then she you know then she
00:06:01
asked me to help her on one and um I was
00:06:05
on NyQuil I had a cold I was so sick
00:06:08
this one more day and she goes I need to
00:06:10
know if the jury is going to come back
00:06:13
for us and when I'm like oh is that
00:06:16
all um anyways so I told her the day and
00:06:20
I told her the time and so I went back
00:06:23
to sleep on my night Quil and my phone
00:06:26
ring and she's like okay she's like the
00:06:29
is back with a verdict she's like you
00:06:32
off by 4
00:06:34
minutes I was like sorry Patty whatever
00:06:38
um she's like that was pretty good she's
00:06:40
like I know you're sick but get dressed
00:06:42
we're going to go drink some margaritas
00:06:43
I was like I really don't feel like
00:06:45
she's like I don't care she's like this
00:06:47
is too big not to celebrate so that's
00:06:50
how I sort of um progressed through the
00:06:54
office of
00:06:55
Das and um I loved it I did it six times
00:07:00
yeah uh there was one that we there was
00:07:02
a loophole we could not get this man
00:07:05
really bothered me cuz the little girl
00:07:07
was only like three and she was killed
00:07:09
in his um trailer he was babysitting for
00:07:12
parents that were meth addicts and um
00:07:15
they found her body in his trailer but
00:07:18
they couldn't prove it was him because
00:07:20
there was no DNA on her body so he was
00:07:23
she was in his trailer yes in his
00:07:25
trailer and he said I went to the story
00:07:28
came back she was dead it still leaves
00:07:32
doubt and so they couldn't they weren't
00:07:35
going to be able to get him and it just
00:07:37
that just bothered me so much not just
00:07:40
that that happened to her but that where
00:07:41
were her parents you know and that there
00:07:43
are a lot of parents out there like that
00:07:45
on drugs that just aren't parenting
00:07:47
their kids and protecting them so I
00:07:50
initiated the Amber Alert in the state
00:07:51
of Arizona and served on the task force
00:07:54
to design it in
00:07:56
