November 20, 2018 / 01:21:50

This episode covers the tragic case of Leslie Mal Seed, who went missing on October 5, 1975, in Rochdale, England. It discusses her family's background, the search for her, and the eventual discovery of her body. The episode details the investigation that followed, including witness accounts and the eventual arrest of Stefan Kisko, who confessed to her murder.

Leslie Mal Seed was sent on an errand by her mother, April, but never returned home. The family, consisting of April and her children, lived in a close-knit community in Turf Hill, Rochdale. The search for Leslie began shortly after she left, with her siblings and stepfather joining in the efforts to find her.

After three days of searching, Leslie's body was discovered on the moors near a lay-by. The investigation revealed that she had been murdered, and forensic evidence pointed towards a suspect. Witnesses reported seeing a man with a young girl on the day of her disappearance, leading police to focus on Stefan Kisko.

Stefan Kisko had a history of indecent exposure and was identified by several witnesses. He was arrested and initially confessed to the murder but later retracted his statement. Despite this, evidence against him was substantial, including details only the killer would know.

The episode concludes with Kisko's trial, where he was found guilty of Leslie's murder and sentenced to life in prison. The case highlights the impact of Leslie's death on her family and the community, as well as the importance of reporting suspicious behavior.

Leslie Mal Seed was abducted and murdered in 1975; Stefan Kisko was arrested and convicted for the crime.

October 5th 1975 April mole seed was making her way through a list of chores in her home on Delamere Road in Rochdale
00:02:01
a town at the foothills of the Moore countryside in northern England as she prepared supper that day around noon
00:02:08
April realized she didn't have any bread so she decided to send one of her kids on a quick errand to the nearby corner
00:02:15
store the MAL seed family had a job roster in place for the three children Laura Fred and Leslie it listed certain
00:02:24
chores each one was responsible for to help out around the house according to the roster that was 12 year old Fred's
00:02:31
turn to run errands however Fred wasn't home that afternoon he was at football practice so next in
00:02:38
line for the job was eleven-year-old Leslie April shouted for Leslie whom she affectionately called well but familiar
00:02:47
Scottish accent rang out to where Leslie played with her 13 year old sister Laura
00:02:52
moments later Leslie appeared before her mother April instructed Leslie to go fetch
00:02:59
bread and air freshener Leslie kicked her feet and protested it wasn't her turn to go to the shops
00:03:06
it was fret April encouraged Leslie with a small reward Leslie playfully asked for sixpence
00:03:14
payment to complete the task another bargained her down to three April gave Leslie a one-pound note to
00:03:21
buy the items and - Leslie tucked the money in a sparkly purple sequin purse her mother also handed her a navy blue
00:03:29
canvas shopping bag with the Tweety Bird character on its side with autumn well underway Leslie stuck two layers on her
00:03:37
small frame to ward off the crisps chill air she wore a blue woollen jumper over
00:03:42
a red and white t-shirt a pink skirt and brown shoes she pulled socks up her thin legs they
00:03:50
will bloom white tartan decorated with her idols Scottish pop band the Bay City Rollers she wrapped herself in a blue
00:03:58
raincoat lifting the hood over her mop of curly brown hair the sight of her youngest daughter all tucked up in her
00:04:05
coat with her hood on and socks pulled up made April laugh - April Leslie was her little darling
00:04:13
generous kind-hearted and enchanting to be around and compared to her other children April was more protective of
00:04:20
Leslie Leslie had suffered ill health since birth born with a congenital cardiac condition
00:04:27
at age three she received open-heart surgery to fix a faulty valve but her body never fully recovered her illness
00:04:35
had suppressed her physical and mental growth by age 11 Leslie stood barely four feet high waited just 25 kilograms
00:04:43
and assessments revealed she had the mental age equivalent to that of a six-year-old at times Leslie's poor
00:04:51
health would make her frail and lethargic confining her to the house with little energy to do much else she'd
00:04:58
sit by the window and watch as other children played outside so when Leslie was feeling well she fully embraced the
00:05:05
day taking nothing for granted even just running a quick simple errand for her mom was an adventure she Eagle
00:05:13
he talked on April harbored no sense of concern allowing Leslie to take the short walk to the shops alone that
00:05:21
Sunday afternoon they lived in the council housing estate of turf hill on the southeastern fringe of Rochdale a
00:05:29
predominantly residential town rod Stahl is nestled in the wide valley of the river roche just over 15 kilometres
00:05:36
northeast of the city of manchester its skyline is dotted with former cotton mills a constant reminder of its rich
00:05:44
history of textile manufacturing an industrial revolution boom in the 19th century required the city to quickly
00:05:51
expand and overnight turning the untouched country land surrounds into dense housing estates turf hill estate
00:06:00
consisted mostly of working families similar to the mole seeds they lived on long streets in matching double-story
00:06:07
red brick terrace houses with small front gardens frank buy picket fences and low shrub hedges the local community
00:06:15
was self-contained and close-knit these families had come to know each other well over the years their children
00:06:22
attended the same schools youth clubs and sporting activities neighbors were friendly and familiar local pubs shops
00:06:29
and parties were full of recognizable faces nobody was a stranger most the turf hill residents knew leslie mal seed
00:06:39
noticeably smaller and sickly than her peers she was easily recognizable around town
00:06:45
despite her ailments those who crossed paths with Leslie met an optimistic spirited young girl with a friendly
00:06:52
impulse to flash her gap-toothed smile and greet everyone she saw it was around 12:30 p.m. when Leslie headed out the
00:07:00
front door of her family home on Delamere Road Laura watched her younger sister late from a window upstairs and
00:07:07
asked where she was going to the shop Worsley responded April told her daughter to return home quickly
00:07:16
Leslie replied that she would be back soon [Music] [Music] one hour had passed since April Mull
00:07:48
seed had sent her daughter Leslie out to fetch bread and she hadn't returned home
00:07:52
yet the errand shouldn't have taken her so long April considered what might be holding Leslie up dhamaal seeds pet cat
00:08:02
Jinxy had recently gone missing perhaps the Leslie had gone searching for the cat during her trip maybe she
00:08:09
had run into a friend and gotten distracted or she might be at the store to baiting what sweet she'd spend her
00:08:15
three pence on April wasn't too worried Leslie could be a little rascal at times
00:08:21
if anything April was just frustrated Leslie had disobeyed her order to hurry home Leslie's older sister Laura was
00:08:30
sent out to find her tracing what she believed was Leslie's unlikely route to the corner shops she headed to a grocery
00:08:37
store called Ryder's where Leslie had most likely gone when Laura arrived she found - the store was closed on Sundays
00:08:46
that meant Leslie would have continued on a little further down and still rode to a convenience store called spa yet
00:08:54
when Laura arrived there Leslie was nowhere to be seen Laura suspected her younger sister might
00:09:02
have bypassed the bread buying altogether Leslie was a regular at a nearby confectionary shop on Broadway n--
00:09:09
called Margaret's but there was no luck there either and Elora returned home alone
00:09:17
April stood by the front gate checking the road in both directions expecting to see Leslie's hooded figure turn the
00:09:24
corner at any moment she wondered if Leslie had gotten herself heard or lost by now Leslie's older brother Fred had
00:09:32
arrived home from football practice and he agreed to go with Laura and continued
00:09:36
the search together they came to the local streets but found her no sign of Leslie it had been almost an hour and a
00:09:44
half since she'd left home to go to the store with no clues to point to where she was Fred rushed to get their step
00:09:52
father Danny Mull seed was a maintenance electrician who worked shift work at an
00:09:58
engineering factory with work done for the day Danny was spending the Sunday afternoon
00:10:03
at the plow in drinking and playing darts when Fred showed up with the news Wesley was missing the last time Danny
00:10:11
had seen Leslie was 7:45 that morning Leslie was still fast asleep in bed when he checked in on her before he left to
00:10:18
catch the bus to work Danny had a deeper fondness and close attachment to Leslie
00:10:24
he'd been her stepfather since she was a baby and was always by her side during her multiple doctor visits and hospital
00:10:31
stays he considered Leslie his own daughter Danny began his own search for Leslie
00:10:38
calling her name down every street as he closed in on the spark convenience store
00:10:43
Danny was overwhelmed by an unshakable worry his movement quicken and his voice became louder he peered over fences ran
00:10:52
through gardens opened up sheds in backyards he pounded the doors of nearby homes asking confused residents if they
00:10:59
had seen Leslie no one had although she was not the type to talk to strangers Leslie was a friendly kid who
00:11:09
would stop and talk to people she recognized so Danny questioned passers-by hoping to track Leslie via
00:11:15
those you may have spoken to but she had left no trail at 3 p.m. Danny and April contacted Rochdale
00:11:24
police officers arrived to the Mulsanne family home and questioned April extensively to determine Leslie's
00:11:35
character habits behavior and friends despite Leslie's developmental delays she was otherwise an ordinary child she
00:11:45
enjoyed going to school and when filling up to it she would participate in class
00:11:49
games physical education and swimming she loved her family sisters brother and pets so it did seem out of character for
00:11:59
her to not want to return home although she could be a bit of a rascal at times the possibility she was playing a prank
00:12:06
or pushing boundaries didn't sit right with those who knew her police sought witnesses who may have seen Leslie
00:12:14
walking around to the turf Hill estate that afternoon a child who lived on Delamere Road told police she was
00:12:22
swinging on the gate at the front of her home when she saw Leslie leave her house
00:12:25
around 12:30 and walked to the end of the street where she turned to left in to stay up slain the area around stops
00:12:34
Lane was busy that afternoon crowds of children and families had gathered on the adjacent grassy fields of Kingsway
00:12:41
Park for Sunday afternoon sporting activities five people who were traversing to and from the park recalled
00:12:49
seeing Leslie walking down the street one of those was ten year old Bernadette Haggerty who was Leslie's neighbor she
00:12:58
too was heading to the corner shops that afternoon Leslie caught her eye swinging
00:13:03
her blue shopping bag and crossing Turf Hill Road Bernadette headed down and still rode a
00:13:09
busy suburban road lined with houses and on which the sparse Thor front was located leslie headed down sty ups lane
00:13:18
which ran parallel to han still road perk up behind the ruiz of the houses leslie was taking the back streets to
00:13:25
the store and a bernadette lost sight of her more witness accounts placed Leslie
00:13:32
in sty ups lane a new resident to the area who didn't know Leslie personally recalled crossing paths with a little
00:13:39
girl in a blue hooded raincoat 13-year old Ernie Tyrone had just purchased some sweets from the spar shop and began
00:13:46
walking down the install road towards her home on turf Hill Road the local roads in the estate were intersected by
00:13:53
narrow walkways known as Snicket's use the shortcuts between the streets and neither saw Leslie down a Snicket that
00:14:01
led into stops lane the two girls acknowledged each other and continued on their separate ways
00:14:09
another girl witnessed this interaction she recalled seeing Leslie's blue and white tonton Bay City Rollers socks when
00:14:18
Leslie's neighbor bernadette reached the corner store she assumed Leslie wasn't far behind that were walking adjacent
00:14:25
paths to the same location a 15 year old boy was also inside the store shopping at the time neither he nor Bernadette
00:14:34
recalled ever seen Leslie arrive the owners of the spar convenience store didn't see Leslie that afternoon either
00:14:43
the owners of Margaret's the confectionary shop on Broadway n-- were also questioned and they couldn't
00:14:49
remember if Leslie had visited this meant the last confirmed sighting of Leslie was on sty UPS Lane
00:15:01
when the search party hit the area there was a collective sense of unease the section of stops Lane Leslie had
00:15:08
wandered through was stark contrast to the area in which he had come the busy populated road aligned with house fronts
00:15:16
and wide open parkland funneled into a narrow alleyway there a few hundred meters have met up with the turn of
00:15:23
Buxton prison and opened into a high traffic road again but in this small section of Lane way
00:15:29
there was no traffic it was barely wide enough for a single car to slowly drive down lining both
00:15:37
sides were the tall timber fences that encased the backyards of surrounding homes it was a quiet secluded path
00:15:44
completely enclosed and hidden from view based on witness statements police were
00:15:52
convinced to Leslie didn't make it to the shops that afternoon something must have happened to her in sty UPS Lane
00:15:58
between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. causing her to deviate from her errand the only way his overwhelming sense of isolation
00:16:06
raised concerns but there were no signs of wrongdoing so there was still the possibility who as Louie was fine
00:16:15
police door knocked nearby houses hoping someone may have seen or heard something
00:16:19
a resident of stop slaying told police she was standing at her kitchen window when she glimpsed Wesley walked past she
00:16:28
also recalled noticing a small yellow vent that looked to be tangling Wesley it was concerning the police had to
00:16:35
consider the encounter could be innocent most people would slow down behind a child on a narrow street as daylight
00:16:44
faded the search for Leslie intensified the assumption Leslie might seek shelter
00:16:50
for the cold night resulted in searches of garages cars sheds drains as well as abandoned houses the search radius
00:16:58
expanded to farm and wasteland beyond the edges of the estate still there was no sign of Wesley
00:17:07
it was a sleepless night for the mole seeds but during the following morning of Monday October 6 the search
00:17:15
recommenced police cars toward turf hill estate announcing information over their
00:17:20
speakers about Leslie mole seeds disappearance and description as news spread rumors followed talker rows of
00:17:29
unknown men seen driving around town propositioning local females and enticing children into their cars with
00:17:37
this in mind focus returned to the last place Leslie was seen stay up slain but the simple fact was there had been no
00:17:46
reports of a scuffle screaming running footsteps the acceleration of a car engine or anything that could suggest
00:17:53
who as Lee met with danger there three long days passed with no news by the night of Tuesday October 7 hopes had
00:18:04
faded it seemed as though every possible location was checked and rechecked every
00:18:09
Street combed every house visited police operations we aren't down as the incident room moved from the mole sait
00:18:17
family home to the Rochdale police station the stress was taking its toll on the entire community search parties
00:18:25
were disbanded vigils had come to an end and to the mole seeds were faced with the overwhelming realization that their
00:18:33
low might never come home David Greenwell a joiner by trade was working a refilling job for a Rochdale
00:18:46
jewelry shop at the time of the Leslie's disappearance his home was a two-hour drive southeast in Nottingham instead of
00:18:54
making the for our return trip from Nottingham each day Greenwell slept in Rochdale Monday to
00:18:59
Thursday and returned home on weekends to save on hotels he slept in the back of his yellow minivan which he'd park in
00:19:08
a quiet labor sheltered by a hill just off the a 672 motorway a label a is a public rest area located next to large
00:19:16
thoroughfares such as motorways early on Wednesday October 8 Greenwell woke in his been feeling the urge to relieve
00:19:27
himself he scaled the hill looking for somewhere out of sight of passing motorists he found a flat more covered
00:19:34
in Bracken and wild grass about 12 meters above through the low-lying fog a blue shape lying in the grass caught his
00:19:42
eye greenwall moved closer to inspected his stomach lurched there was a blue raincoat attached to the body of a small
00:19:52
child facedown and unmoving in shock greenwall scrambled back down the hillside to his van he drove to the
00:20:01
jewelry shop arriving just after 8:00 a.m. colleagues immediately sensed something
00:20:07
was seriously wrong pale and shaken Greenwell revealed what he discovered on the moor they immediately called the
00:20:16
police at 8:25 a.m. police were cordoning off the lay-by in surrounding more Detective Chief
00:20:26
Superintendent Jack Dibb head of West Yorkshire law enforcement and Dick Holland his junior officer from the town

of Halifax arrived to the scene the body was that of a young girl was pale freckled skin in the curly brown hair
00:20:42
she was wearing a blue hooded raincoat a pink skirt and tartan socks none of her
00:20:49
clothing was disturbed a navy blue tweetybird bag whoo I emptied her fate and a purple sequin purse was found near
00:20:58
her body it was unzip and empty there was little bear Leslie mal Sayed had been found the
00:21:10
murder weapon appeared to be a small knife with a thin blade half an inch wide in two two and a half inches long
00:21:16
twelve stab wounds cut through Leslie explodes into her back shoulders neck and head all strikes occurred from
00:21:24
behind there were no defensive wounds a smear of blood was found on her left thigh
00:21:31
police believed the perpetrator what the knife clean there after the attack forensic scientists were unable to
00:21:39
determine an exact time of death it could have occurred at any time during the three days Leslie was missing no
00:21:47
fingerprints or blood samples were found like semen staining was found on the outside surface of her underwear and
00:21:54
skirt however there had been no penetrative sexual attack the sample was of insufficient quantity
00:22:02
to determine a blood type and in 1975 DNA profiling didn't exist as the morning wore on a cold westerly wind
00:22:13
picked up along the Moors with age sweeping gust important evidence such as particles or fibers we're at risk of
00:22:21
being blown away sellotape was rubbed against a Leslie's clothing to lift any fibers before the winged claim for them
00:22:29
to bright yellow all fibers were found on her jumper and an orange rayon fiber on her right sock trace of a white
00:22:38
powder was also found on Leslie's clothing it was identified as containing maize starch an ingredient in wallpaper
00:22:46
paste investigators combed the moor for evidence the area was littered with rubbish discarded by passing cars or
00:22:55
swept up from elsewhere and carried downwind police collected what they could find including empty bottles
00:23:02
cigarette packets handkerchiefs a sock and a blue pen with a white cap in total 379 items were collected in and around
00:23:12
the crime scene one of these items stood out a broken knife found near the label
00:23:19
however tests later revealed it was not the murder weapon the man who found Leslie David
00:23:27
Greenville was at his home in Nottingham the day of her disappearance and police
00:23:32
quickly eliminated him as a suspect when the police car came to a gentle stop at the front of their delamere Road
00:23:42
home the mole seeds knew their little well had finally been found the investigation into the murder of Leslie
00:23:50
mol seed was kick-started by one hundred police officers from West Yorkshire and
00:23:54
Greater Manchester they were powered by mounting pressure to find to Leslie's killer as soon as possible with no
00:24:03
witnesses having heard signs of a struggle in sty ops lane where Leslie disappeared police considered the
00:24:09
possibility Leslie was lured away by someone she knew and trusted local traders ice-cream man milkman youth
00:24:16
group assistants taxi drivers even Leslie's school bus driver were all interviewed as potential suspects
00:24:24
the grieving mole seat family also felt the heat of the investigators spotlight their personal lives were exposed and
00:24:32
scrutinized for any hint to a motive for Leslie's death Leslie's mother April mol
00:24:38
seed was originally married to Frederic Anderson who was the biological father of Leslie and her three siblings April
00:24:45
believed Frederic did not adjust well to his role as a father tensions peaked when Leslie was born whose ill health
00:24:52
demanded more time and attention one day frederick snapped and stormed out of the family home in a temper
00:25:00
as her relationship with Frederic deteriorated April found comfort in Danny mol seat Danny was far more
00:25:08
compassionate towards her children especially Leslie torn between both men April decided to fix her broken marriage
00:25:16
the innocence moved to Delamere Road where old tensions were revived this resulted in April being hospitalized for
00:25:25
psychiatric treatment upon her release Danny moved into the Delamere Road house to help her recover causing April's
00:25:33
husband Frederick to leave Frederick and April divorced in 1972 afterwards April
00:25:41
and Danny settled into a relationship and in early 1975 they married wheredid bliss was fleeting though Danny lost his
00:25:50
job and the family were overwhelmed with death Danny also had a tumultuous relationship with his older stepdaughter
00:25:58
16 year old Julie the two were always in conflict has Danny drew issue with Julie's boyfriend's causing the pair to
00:26:06
have intense arguments Julie moved out of the Delamere road property to live with her biological father
00:26:12
Fredrik instability led both April and Danny to alcohol when social services visited the mall seat hours after a call
00:26:21
from a concerned neighbor they found the young children home alone and April and
00:26:26
Danny at the pub stressors didn't dissipate when Danny finally found work debt still
00:26:34
overshadowed their daily lives forcing the mole seed family to start borrowing money from friends and neighbors the
00:26:41
people soon stopped lending the money because they were never paid back the mole seeds were far from an ordinary
00:26:50
stable suburban family with divorce debt and drinking problems as well as the added demands of an unwell trial a
00:26:58
possible motive was established although it was shaky no one was fully convinced
00:27:05
the mole seed family would intentionally harm Leslie Danny mole seed had proven when provoked
00:27:12
he could have a temper with his stepchildren did something happen causing him to snap and lash out at
00:27:18
Leslie it wasn't impossible but it didn't seem likely Danny admitted Leslie was his favorite
00:27:26
and therefore she was the least likely target of his frustration nevertheless as more of a precaution
00:27:33
Danny mal Sayed was added to the list of suspects in Leslie's murder by October 10 with no suspects in
00:27:44
custody an additional 100 police officers joined the investigation they followed up on 400 calls that had come
00:27:51
in from the public descriptions of car seen in the vicinity of turf Hill Estate were taken of particular focus was the
00:28:00
labor and more where Leslie's body was found motorists who travel along the a 670 motorway in the previous days were
00:28:09
asked to come forward with descriptions of cars they had seen at or near the lay-by on the a 672 each vehicle was
00:28:17
traced and ruled out except to the cream four-door car with a red primer paint on
00:28:24
the doors were seen on the sunday of Leslie's disappearance within a kilometer of telomere road a turf Hill
00:28:32
Estate resident spotted the vehicle at around 1:30 p.m. she claimed to have seen a young girl in the cars passenger
00:28:39
seat looking down the witness was convinced the young girl was Leslie Mull seed two men saw the same cream-colored
00:28:48
car that afternoon but were unable to say if there were any children in it they identified it as old possibly in
00:28:56
1964 Vauxhall Viva a similar car was described by two more witnesses who spotted it at the Labor
00:29:04
between 6:15 and 6:45 p.m. that night the second vehicle yet to be identified and ruled out was a dirty hand painted
00:29:14
turquoise colored Morris Minor 1000 minivan a total of 14 witnesses described seeing

00:29:35
blanket draped across the windshield a police request for the owners of the cream-colored Vauxhall Viva into the
00:29:43
hand-painted turquoise Morris Minor minivan when on the incident the team of 20 investigators worked full-time on the
00:29:51
search for these two vehicles Raj style local Christopher Coverdale drove past the a6 72 motorway lay buyer the Sunday
00:30:02
Wesley was abducted he approached the lay-by at approximately 1:45 p.m. when he saw a man on the embankment facing
00:30:10
the road and reaching downwards the Caucasian man was approximately 5 foot 6 inches tall plump between 30 and 35
00:30:19
years old with light brown or fair colored hair that looked to be receding he wore a brown jacket in a check
00:30:26
pattern matching trousers and a beige or mustard yellow cardigan he was reaching
00:30:32
down to the outstretched hand of a female child below she was wearing a blue raincoat with the hood up over her
00:30:39
head the girl was not being dragged up the hillside against her will and Christopher assumed the pair were
00:30:46
related perhaps stretching their legs after a long road trip or wanting to check out the view of the Moors
00:30:52
the scene didn't raise any red flags at the time but after hearing about Leslie mal seed Christopher immediately came
00:31:00
forward with this information investigators took Christopher Coverdale to the labor and asked him to point out
00:31:07
where he saw the girl being led to Christopher motioned to an area near where Leslie mole seeds body was found
00:31:17
by October 15 awaited past since Leslie body had been found no arrests had been made so another 100 police officers were
00:31:27
added to the investigation raising the total to 300 officers actively working on the case
00:31:34
collectively they had amassed statements from 14,000 members of the public including Christopher Coverdale chilling
00:31:41
statement of the men leading the young girl up the embankment at the asic seven to lay by Detective
00:31:48
Chief Superintendent Jack Dibb front of the media and expressed the opinion of law enforcement that the Modi for
00:31:54
Leslie's killing was definitely sexual the person responsible was beyond just the pedophile but someone quote mentally
00:32:03
deranged with sexual deviations in need of urgent attention investigators visited mental health facilities and
00:32:11
psychiatric wards in checked for patients who were released or had escaped the weekend though October 5th
00:32:17
crime reports in the Greater Manchester area will look into to determine if Leslie was targeted by a serial offender
00:32:24
that may have attacked other victims they found several reports that piqued their interest two months before
00:32:31
Leslie's murder on the morning of August 12 in miles plating two young sisters were hunched over a canal fishing they
00:32:40
were approached by a man who abducted one of them and assaulted her he returned her to the canal after the
00:32:46
attack on Tuesday October 7 two days after Leslie had disappeared a six-year-old
00:32:53
girl in Denton was assaulted an unidentified man offering sweets lured the girl into a Breann car described by
00:33:01
a witness as a four-door Cortina the girl was taken to a secluded Road where she was indecently assaulted before
00:33:08
fleeing then in Stockport a man attempted to drag a thirteen-year-old girl into his
00:33:14
car but she managed to free herself and escaped detective Jack Dibb recognized there were notable differences between
00:33:23
each of these attacks and two Leslee mole Said's murder but believed it would be foolish to completely disregard a
00:33:29
link closer to Rochdale residents were hyper vigilant the sooner Leslie's killer was caught the sooner they'd
00:33:38
regained their sense of safety the police were never short on reports of suspicious behavior and sexual deviance
00:33:45
teachers reported a tall slim man taking photographs of children in the school playground lone female travelers
00:33:53
reported male drivers offering them lifts a report came in about a man who exposed himself to a woman and another
00:34:00
of a man caught masturbating in public the investigators suspect profile for Leslie's killer was basic mail post
00:34:09
puberty with access to a car but they were also open to the possibility more than one person may have been involved
00:34:16
including a female accomplice used to lure Leslie this was of course the mo of serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian
00:34:24
Brady who were active ten years earlier as covered in case 49 of case file [Music]
00:34:33
as the investigation continued to teenage girls from the turf hill estate approached police with some startling
00:34:39
news they claimed to have seen Leslie mal seed between eight and 8:15 p.m. the Sunday she went missing
00:34:47
the girls were waiting for their boyfriends who were in a nearby supermarket they said they spotted
00:34:52
Leslie walking alone just outside the estate the girls had a short conversation with Leslie and afterwards
00:35:00
she walked off towards Rochdale town centre this was the first reported sighting of Leslie beyond sty ups lane
00:35:08
this sighting rattled the entire investigation previous statements were now in question
00:35:14
this included Christopher Coverdale sighting of the man and a girl on the embankment above the lay-by at around
00:35:20
1:45 p.m. police had strongly suspected this had to have been Leslie and her killer moments prior to her death but
00:35:28
now two witnesses had come forward reporting a sighting of Leslie hours after this
00:35:34
then came yet another surprising revelation three boys came forward and revealed they spoke to Leslie near the
00:35:42
spark convenience store on an still road at 2:30 p.m. the sunday of her disappearance
00:35:47
this also went against what police had interpreted so far having believed she disappeared from stai ops Lane sometime
00:35:55
between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. police were forced to reshape their theories of Leslie's actions on Sunday October 5th
00:36:03
based on these new accounts the three boys who saw her in the afternoon and the two teenage girls who saw her that
00:36:11
night were reading of you´d during these re interviews all five witnesses retracted their statements each one
00:36:20
admitted their stories were completely made-up none of them had actually seen Leslie that afternoon or night so police
00:36:29
were back to their original theory Leslie had disappeared from stai ops Lane sometime between 12:30 and 1:30
00:36:36
p.m. these two false leads were just a few of many investigators didn't want to disregard any reported sighting no
00:36:45
matter how unlikely it seemed this meant valuable time and resources were constantly wasted on following wrong
00:36:52
leads incorrect sightings and to outright lies Detective Chief Superintendent Jack Dibb didn't want
00:37:01
anyone or anything to be eliminated from the MAL seed murder investigation until
00:37:06
every last piece of information was obtained and proven absolutely unrelated to her abduction and murder he sifted
00:37:14
through the case with the finest of cones that is until he was called back to West Yorkshire to lead a different
00:37:21
murder inquiry in Bradford the leadership in the Massey de murder investigation was handed over to his
00:37:28
junior officer detective Superintendent dick Holland you may recall the name dick Holland
00:37:34
from his participation in the Yorkshire Ripper investigation covered in case 37 of case file
00:37:40
Jack Dibb would continue to oversee the investigation into Leslie mal seeds murder but dick Holland was now
00:37:47
responsible for it detective Holland made renewed appeals to the public reiterating their ongoing
00:37:54
search for the owners of the cream 1964 Vauxhall Viva witnessed with a child passenger and to the hand-painted
00:38:01
turquoise Morris 1000 minivan seen at the Labor information then came in about a
00:38:10
disturbing incident on the night of Friday October 3rd at the youth club at Kingsway Park two nights before Leslie
00:38:17
was abducted Leslie was a member of that same News Club and too lived less than 300 meters
00:38:24
away from the park although she wasn't there the night of October 3rd when the following incident occurred at 9:50 p.m.
00:38:33
that night three girls aged between 16 and 18 aught towards the Kingsway youth club they were startled by a man who
00:38:41
opened his coat and let his pants drop exposing his genitals the girl shrieked and ran towards the youth club one of
00:38:49
the girls heard the man yell when I get you bastards I'll shove this right up you police spoke with other children
00:38:57
present at the youth club that nine to ten year old girls were walking home when they caught sight of a man standing
00:39:03
in the shadows of the front porch of a clinic on Stiles Lane leaning against the wall with a hand in his pocket he
00:39:10
watched as the girls walked past unease by his lingering presence the pair rushed back to the safety of the Kings
00:39:18
wait youth club they described the man as around 5 foot 10 inches tall thin wearing a dark overcoat and a dark hat
00:39:26
possibly a beanie they along with others who were out walking that night also noticed the dark green or yellow car
00:39:35
parked nearby with the radio playing way out from an open window many other children came forward with their own
00:39:43
accounts of this unknown men some thought he was wearing a black beret a little girl thought he was wearing a
00:39:50
mask over his face another saw he had a pair of binoculars around his neck one girl watched the man from the
00:39:57
windows of the youth club building she said he was carrying a knife police found the children's
00:40:04
recollections of the night varied in minor details the police expected small discrepancies or exaggerations in
00:40:10
statements given by young children and teenagers who witnessed something traumatic nevertheless one thing was
00:40:17
consistent they all saw a suspicious man acting indecent near the youth club that
00:40:23
night only two nights before Leslie mole seed was murdered 13 year olds Deborah Mills and Maxine Buckley were at the
00:40:33
youth club on the night of Friday October 3rd as well they both observed the deviant loitering around sty ops
00:40:40
Lane and were able to offer police their own descriptions of the man Deborah and
00:40:45
Maxine had another frightening encounter the following day as well October 4th the day before Leslie was murdered about
00:40:54
12:45 p.m. Maxine and Deborah were walking together along with other saw Street in the turf Hill Estate they both
00:41:03
caught sight of a man loitering on the corner of Jackson Street he looked to be 5 foot 10 inches tall between the age of
00:41:10
20 and 30 with a broad build smooth complexion and light brown hair he wore a light green parka
00:41:18
the men crossed the street and stood before the girls he opened his coat exposed his genitals then immediately
00:41:25
took off running along Heather saw Street towards Crawford Street Maxine ran home and police were
00:41:31
contacted this time Maxine thought she knew who the man was Maxine told her mother Sheila I think
00:41:40
that was the man who lives in Crawford Street the house with the plants in the window police scoured the area but
00:41:48
couldn't find the man as Maxine believed she recognized the man as a resident of
00:41:53
Crawford Street she was driven by police to point out which house she believed he
00:41:57
lived in the police watched the property for a long time but there was no sign of
00:42:02
life inside nobody came or went the place was empty it was clear to police a pervert was in the turf Hill estate
00:42:12
confronting young children and teenagers on the same weekend that Leslie was murdered so naturally they considered
00:42:19
this unidentified man as a suspect in Leslie's attack almost a month into the search for Leslie's killer yet another
00:42:28
incident was recorded to police this again involved in Maxine Buckley who witnessed the youth club and if ever saw
00:42:35
street flashings Maxine's mother Sheila called police on the night of Wednesday November 5th the town of Rochdale was
00:42:44
alive with festivities and fireworks for Guy Fawkes night also referred to as bonfire night as residents lit up
00:42:51
bonfires all over town as part of the celebration at around 8:30 p.m. that annoyed Maxine Buckley walked home from
00:42:59
a bonfire party with her friend Michael repeating they were walking down Vava saw Street when Michael recalled
00:43:06
Maxine's dr. broccoli and her expression changed from a smile to blank fear up ahead a man wearing a parka walked
00:43:16
towards them he was pulling faces and grinding his teeth Maxine recognized him as the man who
00:43:23
exposed himself to her and Deborah Mills on October 4th in Ravis Austrey Michael and Maxine ran to her place to
00:43:31
tell her mother police conducted a patrol to try and find the man but they had no success Maxine Michael enter
00:43:40
their mother's got into a car and drove to the house on Crawford Street where Maxine believed the perpetrator lived
00:43:46
and this time there were signs of life the front door was open and the hallway illuminated inside was a
00:43:56
small older woman standing beside a looming overweight men in dark trousers and a light shirt
00:44:03

00:49:04
police arrived to the house on Crawford Street at 10:20 p.m. they wanted to interview the man
00:49:10
Maxine Buckley had identified as the sexual deviant who'd exposed himself to her on October 4th on Vava sourcetree
00:49:17
maxine wasn't certain if he was also the same man from the youth club incident on
00:49:21
october 3rd but given the similarities in both incidents it seemed likely that were
00:49:26
perpetrated by the same offender charlotte Kisco answered the door inside the police found the house in disarray
00:49:35
boxes filled with belongings were everywhere Charlotte explained they were in the
00:49:40
process of moving when police told her the reason of their visit Charlotte said you have no right to accuse my son of
00:49:48
such things he's a sick boy he has only been out of hospital a couple of days my
00:49:54
son wouldn't do a thing like that and I don't like what you're saying about him police were introduced to Charlotte's
00:50:02
son 23-year old Stefan Stefan's parents emigrated to England after the second world war
00:50:08
Charlotte born in Yugoslavia had worked in Rochdale cotton mills and his father ivan was a ukrainian road worker at
00:50:17
first a healthy baby stefan developed asthma when he was six months old from the cotton dust in the nearby textile
00:50:23
mills by age five he developed eczema health specialists advised Stefan should be permanently moved elsewhere but the
00:50:32
kishka family were relying on Rochdale for work instead Stefan was taken for a brief stay at his
00:50:38
grandmother's house in Austria the cleaner air cleared his asthma and eczema only to be replaced with other
00:50:45
health problems including a blood disorder and an abscess at age six he was taken back to Rochdale and enrolled
00:50:52
in school one year behind his peers other children considered Stefan strange he wasn't interested in playing with
00:51:00
them he didn't have the energy even if he wanted to over the summer he was sent back to Austria and two missed out on
00:51:07
social activities back in Rochdale therefore Stefan never had any close friends his health continued to decline causing
00:51:16
him to focus more on academic studies his headmaster recalled he was a loner and had no interest in typical youth
00:51:22
activities nevertheless his classmates considered him friendly well-behaved and generous Stefan got along with others
00:51:31
and didn't attract negative attention but as he got older he became an easy target for bullies
00:51:37
he became ostracized and eventually he moved schools upon leaving school in 1968 he earned a certificate in office
00:51:47
studies whilst attending night classes the further his English in German in 1969 he began work as a clerk with a tax
00:51:55
agency Stefan was intelligent enough to perform his duties although he was perceived by his colleagues as unworldly
00:52:02
and immature nevertheless his superior considered him a satisfactory worker female staff appreciated Stefan because
00:52:10
he was always willing to help him carry heavy items assessments revealed Stefan had the mental and emotional development
00:52:18
of a 12 year old despite his towering bulky frame he was considered a gentle giant he had a soft
00:52:25
high-pitched voice and his teeth were brown from an addiction to sweets he was known to always carry a bag of
00:52:32
sweets on him making him popular with local children awkward and vulnerable he avoided work social activities
00:52:40
preferring to stay at home in September 1970 when Stefan was 18 years old his 56
00:52:47
year old father Ivan collapsed on a street he had suffered a fatal heart attack and was buried at Rochdale
00:52:54
Cemetery with the death of Ivan Kisco Stefan and his mother Charlotte drew strength from each other for Stefan
00:53:03
Charlotte was his best friend others viewed their closeness as abnormal especially for someone Stefan's age on
00:53:11
November 5th 1975 one month after Leslie's murder police spoke with Stefan questioning him about the numerous
00:53:19
reports of indecent exposure around a turf hill estate Stefan left from his chair and demanded his mother when
00:53:27
Charlotte appeared he said they have just accused me of exposing myself to some girls
00:53:33
Charlotte responded that's stupid he never would do a thing like that Stefan allowed the officers to check out
00:53:42
his car a small bronze colored Hillman Avenger he told police he hadn't driven the car for several waits due to a
00:53:49
recent leg injury one year prior Stefan suffered a complex break in his ankle known as a Potts fracture he hadn't
00:53:56
fully recovered from the surgery and at times he'd go through bouts of agonizing
00:54:00
pain requiring him to walk with a stick police found nothing to suggest Stefan was the sexual deviant but before they
00:54:09
left they warned him they'd be making further inquiries a report was written on the matter detailing the accusations
00:54:16
against Stefan and a copy of this report was handed to the team investigating Wesley mo-cedes murder just over a month
00:54:26
later around 5:00 p.m. on December 7th the day of lesli mole Said's funeral two detectives investigating the murder
00:54:33
arrived to a semi-detached house in Kings Road it belonged to the kids ghost who had just completed their move from
00:54:41
their home in Crawford Street flow of information for the Mull seed murder investigation had dried up police were
00:54:49
reaching a standstill 12,000 269 people had been checked out and 8,000 and 69 vehicles had been investigated 7,000
00:54:59
formal interviews were conducted and 4917 statements were taken the Vauxhall Viva and Morris Minor vehicles seen by
00:55:09
witnesses when Lesley disappeared were yet to be identified although thousands of matching vehicles had been
00:55:15
ruled out six people had been listed as strong persons of interest but all were eventually eliminated from the
00:55:22
investigation detectives when they are sifting meticulously through the abundance of
00:55:28
information obtained hoping to find a missing link or piece of evidence that would lead them to the identity of
00:55:33
Leslie's killer this included investigating the claims made against Stephan Kisco by Maxine
00:55:40
Buckley Stephan was questioned for a second time about the October 4th indecent exposure incident on valise or
00:55:47
street Stephan gave a more detailed alibi this time he said he was in hospital having
00:55:53
an operation on his foot the following day when Leslie was abducted Stephan claimed he was being
00:55:59
discharged from the hospital when police asked for proof Stephan shuffled through
00:56:04
cluttered packing boxes then conceded he couldn't find his hospital discharge letter Stephan excused himself to make a
00:56:12
phone call police overheard the conversation Stephan asked the person on the other
00:56:17
line if they could remember what day he left hospital after a long pause Stephan
00:56:22
said oh it's just that I'm supposed to have killed a little girl Neil Steffen ended the call and told police the
00:56:30
person he spoke to was unable to help Stephan said he was willing to make a formal statement regarding his
00:56:38
whereabouts on Sunday October 5th at this stage detectives weren't fully convinced Stephan had any involvement in
00:56:46
Leslie's abduction or murder he didn't fit their profile of Leslie's killer he was socially naive and childlike polite
00:56:54
and gentle and although a little strange detectives believed he was decent and respectable
00:57:01
stephane made a one-page signed statement quote as far as I can remember on Sunday October 5 this year I was an
00:57:10
inpatient at Manchester Royal where I was receiving treatment for an ankle injury if I had been discharged from
00:57:16
hospital on October 5 I would have certainly have spent all that day at home as I was almost unable to walk at
00:57:22
the time detectives later visited the Manchester Royal Hospital upon checking hospital records they made a startling
00:57:32
discovery Stephan kishka was not discharged than October 5 he was discharged on September 15 three weeks
00:57:42
before Leslie was abducted detectives returned to the kingsroad house to confront Stephan with the discrepancy in
00:57:53
his statement he seemed unruffled saying it was a long time ago and he couldn't fully remember the day he accepted he
00:58:01
must not have been at Manchester Royal Hospital on the weekend of October 4 and 5 instead he claimed he was at his
00:58:07
Crawford Road home hoping his mother pack in preparation for their move to Kings robe according to Stefan
00:58:15
he remained home for the duration of his recovery he didn't go out at any time because he had difficulty walking stefan
00:58:22
stated specifically that the first time he left the house after his surgery was sunday october 12 a week after Leslie
00:58:29
was abducted on that day he drove his mother and aunt to Rochdale cemetery to visit his father's grave at 10:30 a.m.
00:58:39
on December 21 1975 Stefan Kish Co heard another knock at his front door the three detectives on Stefan's doorstep
00:58:48
asked him to accompany them to the police station to further discuss the incidents of indecent exposure
00:58:54
Stefan agreed he also committed police to search his bedroom and car in his bedroom police collected a soul tissue
00:59:03
from under his pillow in several adult magazines found on the side of his bed at the police station
00:59:10
Stefan was again questioned about the weekend of October 4 & 5 he maintained he didn't leave the house
00:59:16
as he was too weak after his visit to the hospital weeks prior to clarify police again asked Stefan why he was
00:59:24
hospitalized he explained that he had a blood transfusion and several injections
00:59:30
this story caught the interviewing detectives attention it was completely different to his previous version where
00:59:37
he said he was hospitalized to receive treatment on an injured foot it was unlikely to be a simple mistake the
00:59:44
reason for a hospital visit isn't something one would easily confuse Stefan appeared lost in his own lies
00:59:53
stephane stood firm about not leaving his house until Sunday October 12 when he took his mother and aunt to visit
00:59:59
Rochdale Cemetery police then moved to their focus to bonfire night November 5 the night Maxine Buckley and Michael
01:00:08
Rigby saw Stephon walking along with other saw Street pulling faces and grinding his teeth at them
01:00:13
but Stefan denied going out that night to believing they were dealing with a liar detectives pressed the matter
01:00:21
as expected Stefan wasn't being truthful he later admitted he was out that night
01:00:27
he was driving some items from the crawford street address to their new house on Kings Road in response to being
01:00:35
positively identified by Maxine Buckley as the man who exposed himself to her Stefan claimed she must have been
01:00:41
mistaking him for someone else police since Stefan was hiding something and two that were right through more
01:00:50
questioning they got Stefan to admit he stopped by a bonfire when out driving that night when asked if he got out of
01:00:57
the car he said quote well uh now you've done but I can't remember it's all a bit
01:01:03
hazy it's these damned injections they make me feel a bit funny for a few days after
01:01:09
I have them in August 1975 two months before Leslie's motor Stefan was admitted to hospital for severe anaemia
01:01:20
tests confirmed Stefan had hypogonadism a hormone deficiency that causes defective sexual development this
01:01:28
explained why Stefan was stuck in a childlike mental state treatment was intramuscular testosterone
01:01:35
injections administered once every three weeks common side effects from the injections
01:01:40
were headaches dizziness and anxiety but more worryingly from the police point of
01:01:46
view they could cause increased aggression an increased interest in sex as Stephan was questioned at Rochdale
01:01:54
police station a further search of his kingsroad house was underway Charlotte kishka was home at the time
01:02:00
and didn't object to the search in Stefan's bedroom officers found the small white handled penknife in a box on
01:02:08
the windowsill and a red-handled flick knife in the top drawer of his dressing table a search of his car revealed a
01:02:15
pair of red industrial gloves under the front passenger seat two pairs of imitation leather gloves on the
01:02:20
dashboard three deflated balloons and two bags of sweets in the ashtray a syringe in the glove compartment and a
01:02:27
hooded parka on the rear seat under a piece of carpet in the boot they found 11 adult magazines back at the station
01:02:36
police questions Stefan about the testosterone injections for his hormone deficiency Stefan said well when I was
01:02:44
in hospital I discussed my problem with a doctor and he gave me some injections to bring me on he later added of no
01:02:51
interest in girls at all but the injections will help me Stefan was asked to empty his pockets he
01:02:59
produced the black handled knife he claimed to use to clean his car battery he also produced a second knife this
01:03:05
blade was three and three-quarter inches long and half an inch wide with an imitation bone handle
01:03:11
according to Stefan he used this one to cut string police went back to questioning Stefan about bonfire night
01:03:20
November 4th the night Maxine identified him as the man who exposed himself to her they had so far established Stefan
01:03:28
lied about his actions that night they were now aware he did leave his house was out driving and he dropped by a
01:03:34
bonfire police wanted to know what he did when he stopped the car they were expecting him to confess to being on
01:03:41
Vava saw street and subsequently prove he was the unknown Davian exposing himself to
01:03:46
children in the turf hill estate what Stefan revealed instead shot them all whilst in his car by the bonfire Stefan
01:03:56
said he saw some girls and a quote got it out and a wank to myself off he said that was the first time he had
01:04:04
masturbated in public but he'd done at other times since then when girls weren't around he would use the
01:04:10
magazines instead as Stefan's interview continued police searching his car made an intriguing discovery in the glove
01:04:21
compartment they found two small pieces of paper with a list of handwritten letters and
01:04:25
numbers they were car registration details one stood out from the rest unlike the others it was written in red
01:04:34
ink ADK 5:39 el police had actually seen this number plate before it belonged to
01:04:44
a renault 16 teo the owners had spoken to investigators earlier in the Mulsanne murder
01:04:50
investigation the Renault belonged to a couple from Manchester on Sunday October 5 1975 the
01:04:58
day of Leslie's abduction they visited Rochdale arriving at 2:15 p.m. and leaving at 7:15 p.m. upon their arrival
01:05:06
and departure they had travelled along the a6 72 motorway passing the lay buyer where Leslie mal seeds body was later
01:05:13
found police wanted to know why Stefan Kisco had this number plate written on a piece
01:05:20
of paper in his car with this discovery detective Superintendent dick Holland the leading officer of the Mulsanne
01:05:27
murder investigation decided to take a more active role in the questioning of Stefan kishka he sensed this was the
01:05:33
smoking gun they'd spent three months searching for detective Holland asked Stefan about the list of car
01:05:41
registration details he had written down Stefan admitted he would write down the
01:05:45
registration details of any vehicles he was bothered by or saw driving recklessly he'd started years before
01:05:52
when he was almost hit by a car police had told him back then that unless the car could be identified there was little
01:05:58
they could do and do they suggest that he take note of the registration details if it ever happened again
01:06:04
Stefan went through his lists and was able to recall the exact reason why he wrote down most of the registration
01:06:10
numbers he faltered only at one the number plate belonging to the Renault that passed the lay-by to us the day of
01:06:17
Leslie's disappearance the number plate that stood out from the others as it was
01:06:22
written in red ink stephane couldn't remember why he wrote that registration down he stated I can't
01:06:31
remember anything when I've had my injections I go all hazy fifteen hours had passed since Stefan
01:06:42
kishka arrived to the Rochdale police station it was obvious the pressure was mounting on him he kept asking if he
01:06:49
could go home to his mother when not answering questions he'd sit in uncomfortable silence he refused food
01:06:57
had little to drink and have vomited several times police eventually allowed him to get some sleep
01:07:03
he didn't awaken until 11:30 the following day questioning recommenced but at one point detective de colon had
01:07:12
to take a break stating he needed to supervise Stefan's car which was being transported to the
01:07:17
forensic testing lab Holland left Stefan in the presence of Detective Sergeant John Ackroyd as they waited for Holland
01:07:25
to return Stefan asked what was going to happen Ackroyd replied that further inquiries would be made
01:07:33
Stefan stated this is terrible it's those damned injections all this would never have happened
01:07:41
Aykroyd pried Stefan for more information Stefan said well that thing at Kingsway youth club and that little
01:07:50
girl I picked up Aykroyd asked Stefan which little girl he was referring to the little girl Lesley Stefan answered I
01:07:59
don't know what happened it's all a bit hazy it's those damned injections Stefan
01:08:06
went on to say that he picked Wesley up in his car on the Sunday the day he killed her Aykroyd stiffened ER Stefan
01:08:16
to clarify did you just admit you murdered Leslie mole seed yes Stephane required I killed
01:08:25
that little girl Ackroyd rushed to the door and signaled to the other officers within minutes
01:08:32
detective Holland returned with Chief Inspector Thomas Steele in tow stephane began his confession he started
01:08:41
with the incident at the youth club the night of Friday October 3rd quote it was
01:08:47
fairly dark there was a disco going on over youth club and girls came down the road something came over me and I
01:08:54
unzipped my trousers and got my penis here I had a knife in my hand but that was a mere triviality as for the valise
01:09:03
or Street incident involving Maxine Buckley on October 4th Stephon said he didn't deliberately
01:09:08
expose himself he accidentally unzipped his pants and it was his shirt flap that
01:09:13
came out next he spoke about Sunday October 5th when out driving he spotted Leslie mal seen walking alone
01:09:21
down broad Lane the two had never met before this moment Stephon pulled up beside her and wound his window down he
01:09:30
couldn't remember what he said but she got into the passenger seat of his car as Stephon drove off Leslie started
01:09:37
shouting he hit her with his hand to silence her they drove for a short while and eventually wound up on the a 672
01:09:46
motorway stephan pulled his car into a Labour feeling overwhelmed by familiar urge he led Leslie up the hillside to
01:09:56
the mall he made her lie on the grass and he masturbated onto her underwear Stephon pushed her away when he was done
01:10:05
after this his memory became hazy he couldn't remember exactly where or how many times he stabbed Leslie he then
01:10:14
wiped the bone-handled knife clean on her body clambered down the hill to his car and didn't look back
01:10:23
after Stefan saw and his niece seven-page confession for the murder of Leslie mol seed he was arrested placed
01:10:30
in a cell at the station and a lawyer was contacted on his behalf Stefan became increasingly distraught
01:10:37
lost in the cell and kept asking if he could go home once his lawyer arrived and the two had a private discussion
01:10:44
Stefan unexpectedly asked to retract his confession police led him back to the interview room Stefan gave a new
01:10:53
statement this time in the presence of a lawyer in this new statement Stefan denied he was at the youth club on
01:11:00
Friday October 3rd he maintained his account of the Vava saw street incident on october 4th that he accidentally
01:11:07
unzipped his pants and a wizzy shirt flap that came out in regards to Sunday October 5th Stefan said he was out
01:11:14
driving around for the turf Hill Estate but he outright denied abducting and killing Lesley mol seed
01:11:21
police was skeptical they had already proven Stephan was a lawyer nevertheless this new statement was written up and
01:11:29
signed by Stephan his lawyer and the officers present despite Stefan's new statement and retracted confession his
01:11:37
arrest was upheld and he was led back to his cell on the way back to the cell detective dear : ask Stefan from your
01:11:45
first statement you have described the effects of the drugs and if you were hazy and can't remember how do you know
01:11:51
what you told me in the first statement is untrue - which Stefan replied I have told you the truth
01:11:59
I remember the girl by the shop in broad Lane and taking her to the Moors I must have stabbed her that's how I
01:12:06
showed you the bone-handled north Stefan had changed his account again he was back to confessing his lawyer was no
01:12:16
longer present when he confessed to this second time at 10:15 p.m. that night Stefan was driven towards Halifax police
01:12:25
station the police car moved away from the lights of Rochdale and into the dark rolling hills of the Moors suddenly the
01:12:34
police car pulled off the road and came to a stop Stefan's body started to shake
01:12:39
his hands moved into the prayer position he said anxiously I can hear voices can't you
01:12:49
the police car rolled out of the labourer and emerged back onto the a 672 motorway on the morning of July 7 1976
01:13:03
Stefan Kisco hunched under the heavy gaze of the trial judge Sir Hugh Park into the 12 jurors set to determine his
01:13:11
fate Stefan had pled not guilty on Christmas Eve the year before his lawyer didn't apply for bail it was the first
01:13:19
Christmas Charlotte kishka was alone without her son there was little doubt amongst the court Stefan kishka had
01:13:28
abducted and killed Wesley Moll seed in private even his own lawyers said they thought he was guilty
01:13:35
Stefan was a confessed public masturbator who'd exposed himself in the presence of young girls stefan
01:13:42
attributed this sexually aggressive behavior to testosterone injections for his hormonal disorder he received one
01:13:49
such injection on Friday October 3rd 1975 two days prior to Lesley mol Said's abduction as the war Stefan felt an
01:13:59
attraction to children and made sense psychologically Stefan's delayed development when he was emotionally
01:14:06
equivalent to a 12 year old so when the injections allowed him to feel sexual attraction and gratification his mind
01:14:13
was attracted to those who most related to children the prosecution labelled Stefan's car a
01:14:21
travelling kidnapping kit he had the bait to lure children balloons and sweets as well as the weapons to carry
01:14:29
out an attack Clovis enormous inside his glove compartment was the list of registration numbers including the one
01:14:37
belonging to the Renault that passed the labour the afternoon of Leslie's disappearance
01:14:43
stephane refused to offer an explanation why he noted this number down the prosecution put forward the Stefan
01:14:50
witness the car whilst that the lay-by with Leslie Stefan's appearance strongly matched eyewitness Christopher covered
01:14:57
hours account of the man he saw leading a child matching Leslie's description up
01:15:01
to the mall that same afternoon and of course Stefan's own confession before he retracted it stated he drove to the
01:15:09
lay-by with Leslie at that taller forensic evidence proved Stefan had contact with Leslie will fibers found on
01:15:17
Leslie's clothing matched carpet used as a mat on the floor of Stefan's vehicle white powder and Leslie's clothing
01:15:24
identified as wallpaper paste was found in Stefan's home a blue pen with a white
01:15:29
cap found at the crime scene matched pens used at his workplace the knife Stefan had previously confessed using
01:15:36
had traces of blood on it the semen staining found on Leslie's underwear could not be blood or DNA
01:15:43
tested due to limitations with the technology but forensic testing did conclude the staining on Leslie's
01:15:49
underwear only contained seminal fluid not sperm this meant it had come from someone who was infertile Stefan was
01:15:59
infertile after Stefan retracted his confession for Leslie's murder he offered an alibi instead on Sunday
01:16:08
October 5 1975 he said he was at home between noon and 1:30 p.m. the timeframe Leslie was likely abducted after lunch
01:16:18
Stefan said he drove his mother in his own to the Rochdale cemetery to lay fresh flowers on his father's grave
01:16:24
after that they visited a grocery store where Stefan purchased the jar of German
01:16:30
mustard he recalled an argument taking place in the store at the time over some curtains
01:16:35
afterwards Stefan drove his mother and aren't home to Crawford Street an employee at the grocery store recalled
01:16:44
Stefan coming in to purchase the mustard and even corroborated his story about the argument over curtains that was
01:16:50
happening in the store but she couldn't be certain a day in question was October
01:16:55
5 she accepted it was just as likely to obtain the following weight back at the kishkes Crawford straight home on
01:17:03
October 5 Stefan's aunt said she remembered hearing the wail of a fire engine when they returned home after
01:17:09
visiting the grocery store police confirmed no fire related emergency calls were made in that area on October
01:17:16
5 but the fire brigade did attend a house in Crawford Street on October 12 this led police to believe the alibis
01:17:24
Stefan had given was for events that had taken place the week after Leslie's murder the most implicating evidence was
01:17:33
Stefan's first confession he detailed facts about the crime scene only Leslie's killer could know
01:17:39
this included Leslie's attacker did not remove her underwear semen staining was found on the outside of her clothing and
01:17:46
to the murder weapon was wiped clean on her body police had intentionally kept these
01:17:51
things from public knowledge to help determine false leads and false confessions yet Stefan had mentioned
01:17:58
these facts in detail in his original confession only the killer could know them the prosecution theorized Stephan
01:18:07
retracted his first confession to avoid shaming guilt and to protect his mother from learning what he had done a proven
01:18:15
lawyer he back pedaled and denied everything in a desperate attempt to secure his release the defense wanted
01:18:22
Stefan to consider arguing a case for me ins Florida under the reason of diminished responsibility arguing the
01:18:28
testosterone injections impaired Stefan's judgment and actions however Stefan refused to admit guilt in any
01:18:35
capacity he was even confident the jury would find him innocent on July 21 1976 after 5 hours and 35
01:18:46
minutes of deliberation the jury and Stefan kishkes trial for the murder of Leslie mal Sayed reached their verdict
01:18:53
guilty Stephane was given a life sentence with a minimum of 30 years early release
01:19:01
would only be considered if he admitted his guilt for the murder the Mulsanne family was satisfied justice was served
01:19:09
for child killer Stefan kishka yet his capture and conviction did not bring April and I'll cede any sense of joy
01:19:16
quote when Leslie died I died a kind of death it just completely and utterly killed
01:19:24
every emotion that I heard I'm still the same today the trial judge sue hue park commended
01:19:34
the police officers of West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester for their great work in bringing Kisco to justice and
01:19:40
for their expertise in sifting through the masses of case material judge Park also praised those who had bravely come
01:19:47
forward and reported the indecent acts committed by Stefan kishka Maxine Buckley was singled out by the judge and
01:19:54
thanked for her sharp eye in identifying Stefan as the sexual deviant in the turf
01:19:58
hill estate it was Maxine who'd set the line of inquiry information leading to the capture of Stefan kishka her mother
01:20:07
Sheila was proud of her daughter's actions she told the media Raj tells children
01:20:12
were much safer now thanks to her daughter Maxine a monster had been put away or so it seemed
01:20:22
