The Strange Death of Professor Shockley | Full Episode

June 19, 2023 / 41:49

This episode covers the mysterious death of Marianne Shockley, her relationship with Marcus Lillard, and the investigation surrounding her drowning in a hot tub.

Marianne Shockley, a professor and entomologist, was found unresponsive in a hot tub on May 12, 2019. Her boyfriend, Marcus Lillard, claimed he left her briefly to gather firewood. The episode features insights from Penny Dearman, the creator of a podcast about the case, who discusses the events leading up to Marianne's death.

Witnesses, including Marianne's sister Ayla and her ex-boyfriend, express their disbelief that Marianne could drown in a hot tub. The investigation reveals Marcus's troubled past with drugs and a history of violent behavior, raising suspicions about his involvement in Marianne's death.

As the investigation unfolds, Clark Heindel, a friend present that night, commits suicide, complicating the case further. The episode highlights the conflicting theories regarding Marianne's death, including potential strangulation and drug-related causes.

Ultimately, Marcus was charged with her murder, but the trial's outcome shocked many as he was acquitted of all charges, leaving lingering questions about what truly happened that night.

TLDR

Marianne Shockley drowned in a hot tub; her boyfriend Marcus Lillard was acquitted of her murder despite troubling evidence.

00:02:35
to gather some firewood as I dropped the wood off at the fireplace I could see Marianne
00:02:41
slumped down he called out her name and she did not respond we started doing CPR
00:02:49
she was pronounced dead at the scene [Music] my mother called me and she said Marianne's gone I just fell to the
00:02:58
ground and I just was saying no Mama no no and she was like she's she's drowned in some hot tub Marianne is not stupid
00:03:07

00:03:13
I just knew that Marcus had killed her I'm Carson Lillard I'm Marcus his son he's angry and he's violent
00:03:20
Marcus is in a police car at this point you're not under arrest or anything right now okay where is Clark he went
00:03:27
into his house and he shot himself to death [Music] the very first thought was he had to
00:03:36
have had something to do with this why would it killed himself there's something he's hiding
00:03:43
I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth foreign [Music] foreign [Music]
00:04:34
it was nearing 3 A.M on Mother's Day May 12 2019. Baldwin County Sheriff deputies stormed
00:04:44
into Clark heindel's house and found he'd killed himself with a shotgun we're gonna need to get that gun away from his
00:04:52
hands still on it [Music] only moments earlier Clark had called 9-1-1 asking paramedics to come to his
00:05:03
home in Milledgeville Georgia and the scene was captured on police body cams Clark said a friend of his college
00:05:11
professor Marianne Shockley had seemingly drowned in his hot tub we got a treat just like a crime scene within
00:05:19
hours Marianne's death was being investigated as a homicide and authorities say they had two suspects
00:05:27
her boyfriend Marcus Lillard who was being held for questioning and Clark a longtime resident of Millageville I
00:05:35
think a lot of people do think that because Clark heindel killed himself he had some kind of involvement
00:05:43
today we're recording on location in Milledgeville this is season two Penny dearman investigated the case on her
00:05:51
podcast I'm doing this podcast because I need to know what happened to her as it turns out Penny had previously met
00:06:01
Marcus I met Marcus when I purchased my truck at the time Marcus was working as a car and truck finance manager and what
00:06:10
was your impression during that transaction he was very nice he was very personable
00:06:16
making jokes making me feel very comfortable very at ease and I liked him right away
00:06:24
pretty much everyone agrees that Marcus who was married and divorced twice was a
00:06:29
charmer but as Penny later learned that charm came with a reputation he was definitely known as a ladies man
00:06:36
everyone regardless of what they thought of him knew that about him somehow God continued to send women my way that were
00:06:46
way too good for me and I would date him and I'd take them for granted one right
00:06:50
after another it was it was a steady pattern he's the most charismatic person I've
00:06:57
ever met I mean he's just got this kind of aura about him that sucks people in Carson is Marcus's 23 year old
00:07:05
son anywhere he wanted to go there was a woman there that he could shack up with
00:07:10
and stay with and eventually Marianne also fell under his spell the two had met in the late
00:07:18
90s when they were students at Georgia College in Millageville and working at the same local restaurant was there a
00:07:25
spark in that moment no I was a kid man I was probably 17 and she would have been uh 20 you know I was
00:07:34
a little you know a little little wormy guy I thought he was fine I mean nothing
00:07:38
stood out to me to be irregular about him Ayla Crippen is Marianne's younger sister she went to the same College as
00:07:46
Marianne and Marcus dated one of my best friends and roommates at the time um they didn't date for very long she
00:07:53
said she got a weird vibe from him Marcus admits drugs got in the way of his college education and he dropped out
00:08:00
I just thought life was a party and I treated as such I never really thought about him again until Marion started
00:08:07
dating him you know two decades later the year was 2017. Marcus was on the road in Athens Georgia he knew Marianne
00:08:18
lived there so he invited her to lunch I was on my motorcycle we took a trip around Athens we went to
00:08:26
her home away from home the Botanical Gardens [Music] motorcycle ride I mean that was
00:08:35
as romantic as you can get for lunchtime on a Wednesday some 20 years after they
00:08:40
first met Marcus says they clicked we spent every possible moment together on the weekends
00:08:49
Marianne enjoyed Marcus's company so much that she brought him along as her assistant on trips to China and Ecuador
00:08:57
so this is a very serious relationship absolutely yeah yeah we were super in love with each other
00:09:03
[Music] send him on his way it says the relationship seemed to suit Marianne's busy lifestyle she'd been
00:09:17
married and divorced three times and had two children she had a PhD and was a star professor at the University of
00:09:24
Georgia where she was known around campus as doc shock her specialty was entomology the study of insects we are
00:09:33
going to talk about bugs Marianne liked everything about insects including their taste ants taste like
00:09:42
citrus well some grain stained bugs taste like cinnamons she embraced entomology the eating of insects and she
00:09:50
believed bugs could be used as a protein source to help solve world hunger so what do we have here today we have Craig
00:09:58
brownies Shakira magic was one of Marianne's students who became a True Believer and something of a bug Baker
00:10:06
and I request she brought some samples let's dig in let's kind of try it you could put a few more crickets on mine
00:10:13
I'm not I'm not scarish to marry him to Marion oh and it's so moist the brownie is
00:10:26
perfectly cooked perfectly baked and the Crickets add a little bit of added crunch yes Shakira says she could
00:10:33
tolerate eating bugs more than she could tolerate Marcus I didn't particularly care for him
00:10:40
I couldn't really put my finger on it but I didn't like them Carson could relate nobody knows a father better than
00:10:47
their own son he had warned Marianne that Marcus had a Jekyll and Hyde personality largely because of drugs he
00:10:56
was on cocaine my whole life and he cautioned her to be careful he's angry and he's violent and
00:11:04
you're gonna see it if I could tell you anything it would just be to get away [Music]
00:11:25
thank you on the afternoon of May 11 2019 Marcus and Marianne were in a celebratory mood
00:11:34
the college school year had just ended and as seen in this surveillance footage the couple went bar hopping in
00:11:40
Millageville before heading over to Clark heindel's house had a few beers smoked a little pot started a list of
00:11:48
some music had a couple more beers Marcus spoke to us from jail he's been behind bars since Marianne's death he
00:11:57
told us about that night and how it all began as an impromptu jam session Clark played the accordion and Marcus
00:12:05
tried his hand at the conga just as they had done in the past we had stepped down from his porch and
00:12:13
were getting ready to leave I said hey Clark I heard you got some acid and he says no but I've got some ecstasy
00:12:20
Marcus says all three of them took the ecstasy pills a drug that makes users feel euphoric but can also cause anxiety
00:12:29
and paranoia what happened next it got all fuzzy after that I was so out of it I couldn't make a
00:12:39
sentence so I couldn't speak but Marquis did later piece together a timeline and told investigators that he
00:12:47
thought he and Marianne got into the hot tub around 9pm Marcus said at one point he got out of
00:12:54
the hot tub and Marianne begged him not to leave she says baby get back in this water with me right now was she afraid
00:13:02
was she expressing any kind of concern she had fear in her voice and it was it was definitely fear Marcus says it was
00:13:10
not clear what Marianne was afraid of why in that moment did you not turn back because I'm an idiot lay down Rhonda
00:13:19
don't touch nothing Marcus initially told deputies that he went into the woods to collect firewood
00:13:31
said the real reason he went into the woods was that he was trying to recreate a scene from a documentary called the
00:13:37
last Shaman while on drugs The League character takes part in bizarre rituals like being
00:13:47
buried alive I said I'm going to the woods to dig a hole Marcus says he went into the woods and
00:13:55
simply lay down for how long he says he does not know I can't remember anything past her saying don't leave me what do
00:14:04
you say to those who are hearing this story of a guy who has a history of drugs who
00:14:11
is claiming you know I blacked out convenient it sounds like the devil was at work I mean everything
00:14:18
that he could have possibly done to line this thing up to make it confusing and deceitful and
00:14:28
it was all there you emerge from the woods what is the first thing you remember seeing hearing
00:14:34
I didn't hear anything I could see Marianne slump down with her chin up to her nose underwater
00:14:46
when Marianne was in the hot tub he says he stayed in the far end of the pool hanging out swimming
00:14:56
and she's in this hot tub do you know at what point you've noticed you wasn't visible I never saw that she
00:15:07
wasn't vulnerable so I got up I guess when he was coming back Marcus says he pulled Marianne out of
00:15:15
the hot tub and placed her on the pool deck in doing so Marcus admits dropping Marianne who suffered a gas to her
00:15:23
forehead at that point he says Clark walked over and he actually says should we call
00:15:30
9-1-1 and what did you say I said no I think she'll be fine but Marianne was not fine that gash on
00:15:38
her head bled profusely and it appeared she was not breathing Marcus and Clark said they took turns giving her CPR but
00:15:46
delayed calling 9-1-1 maybe speak to some of the individuals that were present podcaster penny dearman has her
00:15:54
own theory about why Marcus did not immediately call police in 2015 Marcus was convicted of selling marijuana and
00:16:03
possessing methamphetamine and cocaine he was still on probation for that crime I would say that if you were an
00:16:11
individual who's been in trouble with the law before and you're currently on probation that you would be afraid to
00:16:17
call 9-1-1 it makes my family so angry and so hurt if he had a good heart if he truly loved
00:16:30
Marianne he would have sacrificed anything to save her it's unclear how much time had passed
00:16:38
before Clark called 9-1-1 but investigators believe Marianne had been dead for at least two hours before
00:16:47
help arrived the questions from deputies on the scene got much more pointed if she's
00:16:54
unconscious y'all don't think to call 9-1-1 if she's unconscious deputies decided to separate the men for
00:17:04
further questioning they put Marcus in a squad party policy says I have to put your hand closing time not to transport
00:17:10
you okay just place your hand back for me okay but judging from the body cam footage deputies seem to be having a
00:17:17
hard time getting Clark to cooperate I've been told him three times to stay off the pool
00:17:23
but he's insisting to have his lawyer something something is not right here bro all right wait right there it's crime
00:17:31
scene now wait right there I asked you to wait back now sir I should have went back there but then
00:17:39
the deputy watching Clark got a phone call and Clark wandered off we got a dead one no one noticed that Clark had
00:17:48
slipped into his house not until deputies heard that shotgun go off [Music] and found his body
00:18:03
yeah it tainted the case 100 because there weren't two people there that could say what happened there was only
00:18:13
one but investigators say Clark did leave behind a potential clue a handwritten suicide note
00:18:23
and I just said well he he had to have done it if that pill made me so stupid maybe it made him for once in his life a
00:18:29
violent guy what do you think happened to Marianne Shockley chat now on Facebook and
00:18:39
Twitter um [Music] Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massey and major Brad King say they still can't
00:19:00
shake the unease they felt when they arrived at Clark heindel's house on May 12 2019 during the early morning hours
00:19:08
when Marianne Shockley was pronounced dead the failing at this scene was totally
00:19:16
different than any I'd ever been to and it was a very a very strange strange feeling that everybody noticed here
00:19:25
Sheriff Massey remembers walking through Clark's house when he spotted what turned out to be a handwritten suicide
00:19:33
note on the kitchen counter this is the suicide note Clark wrote before taking his life that is a note
00:19:42
yes that we found in the house he says I am very sorry I don't know what happened
00:19:48
with Marianne but it was on my watch and I am so sorry for the family and friends
00:19:55
Massey says Clark did not admit any guilt in the letter it mostly instructed his heirs on what to do with his
00:20:03
possessions Marcus was now the only surviving witness from this scene that night why was Clark allowed to go back
00:20:11
into his homework well I'll be up front with you it was a violation of our policy and procedures how big of a
00:20:17
mistake was that in this case terrible mistake it was a dramatic a dramatic era in this case
00:20:26
soon after deputies discovered Clark had killed himself Marcus was taken in for questioning hours later he was
00:20:33
interviewed by Michael maben a special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation also known as the gbi
00:20:40
maben broke the news about Clark's suicide during during the time that I guess you
00:20:47
win the matching the car went inside his house he committed suicide sometimes [Music]
00:20:58
you're kidding I'm not I'm not kidding why why would why would he do that I don't know
00:21:10
[Music] that she's alive maybe we knew you're kissing to do that Marcus immediately began speculating on
00:21:24
what might have happened when he says he was in the woods and away from Marianne
00:21:30
hey there's a pretty good chance that Clark got that hot tub with him I almost said it's a very high chance of it I'm a
00:21:37
really high chance not now man do you do you think he did something she would do it to herself and I know I
00:21:44
didn't do anything the investigation was in its early stages and authorities weren't sure who
00:21:52
or what to believe Ayla found it impossible to believe her sister could drown in a hot tub
00:21:59
that made no sense Marianne was intelligent like even if she was drinking in the hot tub I just could not
00:22:06
see that happening almost immediately investigators found out about Marcus's 2015 drug conviction
00:22:14
but they were also looking closely at Clark heindel who was 69 years old and had his own issues and he had a bit of a
00:22:24
checkered past that really caught up with him and impacted his career yes fortunately he
00:22:33
podcaster Penny dearman says Clark's license to practice Psychology was revoked in 2017 after a former female
00:22:41
patient filed a complaint with a State Licensing Board she charged that Clark had engaged her in a sexual relationship
00:22:49
and had given her marijuana it's a pretty sordid Tale but investigators could find no proof
00:22:57
Clark had done anything to Marianne Sheriff Massey had known Clark for years and knew his son had died at the age of
00:23:05
six from a rare form of cancer Blues in his psychology license the death of a young son that had had him
00:23:14
depressed for years the embarrassment of it all and it happened to his house after his son's death Penny says Clark
00:23:21
took the first of several trips to Peru to work with shamans much like the main character in The Last Shaman documentary
00:23:33
by coincidence Marcus says he and Clark discussed that film on the night Marianne died and in another bizarre
00:23:41
twist Marcus says Clark found some hydrangea branches and shook them around Marianne's body
00:23:49
it was a ritualistic or Seance or something Clark who had opened a local Yoga Studio
00:23:56
in recent years had a lot of friends and supporters including Marcus's son who began seeing Clark for therapy when he
00:24:04
was only 14 years old I did love Clark and I still do and I think I didn't realize how much he meant
00:24:12
to me until he was gone Carson says that as soon as he heard Marianne was dead he pinned the blame on
00:24:19
his father whom he describes as a malignant narcissist he was headed towards destruction and was
00:24:28
determined to bring somebody with him and Carson wasn't the only person who felt Marcus had violent tendencies I was
00:24:38
at my desk at the office and a young lady called me extremely upset and she said Sheriff Massey Marianne Shockley
00:24:45
didn't dry him she said Marcus choked her to death [Music] soon after Marianne Shockley was
00:25:08
declared dead in the early morning hours of Mother's Day May 12 2019. Sheriff Massey received that phone call from an
00:25:17
ex-girlfriend of Marcus who said she strongly suspected that Marcus had choked Marianne she said the same thing
00:25:25
happened to me a long time ago when I was at a low point in my life and she said he choked her having sex news had
00:25:33
spread through word of mouth in the small town that Marianne had died in a hot tub and Marcus was in jail I asked
00:25:41
if she'd come give us a statement and she did Marcus's ex-girlfriend told investigators that Marcus had a choking
00:25:49
fetish and that it was a regular part of their sex life how many times do you think you and Marcus had sex
00:25:58
maybe a hundred dollars but how many times do you think choking was involved I would say at least 30 times the woman
00:26:09
said the erotic choking was consensual but one time she says Marcus went too far he tried me long enough to where I
00:26:18
lost Consciousness and my body crumbled to the floor he just left me there Marcus says his ex-girlfriend was
00:26:25
exaggerating but he didn't deny choking her during sex it was really more of a place to put your hands for control just
00:26:34
a little light pressure to the carotid arteries you know does that was really about it there was never any pressure
00:26:40
here the pressure was here it was not that it was blown way out of proportion Marquis said he only tried choking
00:26:48
Marianne one time and not on the night she died he said she told him she didn't like it and he never tried it again
00:26:56
Ayla does not believe him I believe that they were having sex and he choked her and that is what caused her death gbi
00:27:04
agents had first interviewed Marcus on Mother's Day morning and later placed him in custody on a probation hold
00:27:11
stemming from his previous drug conviction the following day Monday May 13 2019 the autopsy results came in and
00:27:21
investigators felt they were damning we were notified by the medical examiner that it was a classic case of shrine you
00:27:28
like busted blood vessels in her eyes and had nothing to do with any drowning medical examiner Dr Melissa Sim Stanley
00:27:37
wrote that Marianne quote died as a result of asphyxia due to strangulation the manner of death is best classified
00:27:45
as homicide given the results of the autopsy and the information from Marcus's ex-girlfriend
00:27:53
Authority Saint Marcus became the focus of the investigation hours after getting those autopsy
00:28:00
results gbi agent Michael maben requested another interview with Marcus and he agreed again he did not request a
00:28:09
lawyer at least at first okay and you need to tell me what the hell happened before you know and we
00:28:17
need to talk about don't know I told you immediately agent maben accuses Marcus of lying
00:28:25
so I'll meet you a lawyer at this point because I mean you've already got your mind made up you already you already got
00:28:30
your mind made up yep I did well a young arrest of America [Music] it was only one day after Marianne's
00:28:39
death when Marcus was charged with her murder he was formally indicted nearly two years later in March 2021 and
00:28:48
charged with four counts felony murder aggravated assault involuntary manslaughter and Reckless conduct He was
00:28:55
ordered held without bond it made sense that she was not responsible for her own
00:29:00
death because I know my sister she wasn't a careless person did it make me feel better no because now
00:29:10
I know that someone took her from us Marcus sat in jail months turned into years Sheriff Massey says investigators
00:29:23
vetted Clark and dropped him as a suspect and as the trial approached Marcus settled on Matt Tucker as his
00:29:30
defense attorney and he just goes I'm not going to admit to anything I didn't do
00:29:37
[Music] largely because of covid nearly three years went by before Marcus Lillard
00:29:44
stood trial for the murder of Marianne chocolate but on April 4th 2022 his trial began here at the Baldwin County
00:29:52
Courthouse assistant district attorney Tammy Coffey laid out what the prosecution believes happened between
00:29:59
Marcus and Marianne on the night she died after they got in the hot tub I think that they engaged in sex I think he
00:30:07
choked her I think he took her too hard and for too long assistant district attorney Nancy malcourt told 48 hours
00:30:15
there was no clear evidence of sexual activity because Marianne's body had been in the hot tub for a prolonged
00:30:23
period of time meanwhile gbi agents had been busy talking to former sex partners of Marcus
00:30:30
to determine if he had choked them it turns out gbi agents found eight women I went out with Marcus a few times back
00:30:41
in the fall of 2016. one night we were having sex and he put his hands around my neck you said he did choke you at
00:30:53
times he did try to choke me that was something that he was into I stopped him twice
00:31:02
it's not something that I'm into I don't like it it scares me prosecutors put six of the women on the
00:31:14
stand the women testified Marcus choked them or attempted to choke them during sex
00:31:20
and two of those Witnesses told jurors Marcus had choked them until they passed out all of it was consensual they're
00:31:28
still alive so I mean how does it even relevant but Ayla thinks their testimony was relevant and demonstrates how
00:31:36
callous and dangerous Marcus could be it's one thing to gamble with your own life you know you want to do drugs if
00:31:44
you want to choke yourself out I mean okay and one of his girlfriends he just told her to shut up so that showed a
00:31:51
disregard for women period the medical examiner testified to her findings but Tucker noticed that the
00:31:59
autopsy revealed the hyoid bone in Marianne's neck was intact and not broken some experts including a surgeon
00:32:09
Tucker consulted considered that unusual in a strangulation case and he said that's what you need to
00:32:15
explore find out why I wasn't broken if somebody was a strangling Marion Why didn't it break
00:32:21
Tucker suggested to Dr Sim Stanley that perhaps whoever killed Marianne was too old or not strong enough to break that
00:32:29
bone he asked could that person be 70 years of age and she said yes before she realized
00:32:36
what she was saying Clark was 69 at the time Tucker says that shows Clark nearly three decades
00:32:44
older than Marcus could have been Marianne's killer but with this juror agree I was not there to prosecute Clark I was
00:32:55
there to find where the Marcus Lillard was guilty or not follow the evidence to learn more about
00:33:03
what happened the night Marianne died at 48hours.com let the record reflect that all jurors
00:33:15
are President States councils the president as Marcus allergic trial progressed defense attorney Matt Tucker
00:33:21
floated the theory that Clark strangled Marianne after she rebuffed his sexual advances it was a scenario that Marcus
00:33:29
said had haunted him while he was behind bars my theory for the better part of the three years was
00:33:36
that he took a shot at her while she was alone and she rejected him prosecutors say there is no evidence
00:33:44
Clark did anything to Marianne and they insist Marcus was the killer in the autopsy it shows manual strangulation it
00:33:53
was deliberate the muscles themselves were severely damaged I didn't I didn't straggler what do you say to people
00:34:03
who are convinced you killed Marianne I've been defending myself for so long I'm not even really concerned what they
00:34:12
think at trial prosecutors Tammy Coffey and Nancy malcor put Marianne's sister Ayla
00:34:19
on the stand because I know my sister I know you know and she talked about a private letter
00:34:26
found in Marianne's house the letter comes her being reflective on her relationships and how she has selected
00:34:35
guys to date or to spend time with that were not good for her did she mention anyone by name she did and that was
00:34:46
Marcus she wrote when he does white lady he gets bile the white lady yeah I understood that to be cocaine
00:34:56
tests show that Marcus did have cocaine in his system the night Marianne died but could not pinpoint when he had taken
00:35:05
the drug as for that private letter what did you do with it I gave it to my dad Ayla testified that her father burned
00:35:15
the letter leading Matt Tucker to question her memory at the beginning of this letter started
00:35:21
as I do not she swooping now she read it three years ago how do you remember what
00:35:28
was in there Tucker offered jurors a second explanation for Marianne's death a theory now embraced by Marcus who no
00:35:38
longer blames Clark I think the Ecstasy in the hot tub killed her I feel like in
00:35:42
my heart of hearts the medical examiners made a mistake Marcus his lawyer tried to get the
00:35:48
medical examiner to admit Marianne could have died because of the amount of ecstasy and alcohol in her system
00:35:55
coupled with the heat of the hot tub ecstasy is also known as MDMA now ma'am it's true that this hot tub is 107.
00:36:04
they're only supposed to be 104. that didn't have a factor with the body temperature being that high with having
00:36:11
the high levels of MDMA inner system with them being drinking all day this had nothing to do with it and she was
00:36:20
like no she just disregarded that immediately but the medical examiner's own autopsy revealed that Marianne had
00:36:28
cardiomegaly an enlarged heart which is a condition that medical experts say could lead to sudden cardiac death
00:36:36
48 Hours had some questions and sent all the autopsy information to Dr Greg Davis
00:36:42
a forensic pathologist not involved with the case after reviewing the documents he said that it was possible Marianne
00:36:50
was strangled but a valid competing cause of death a sudden cardiac death due to mixed drug intoxication a lethal
00:36:59
mix of MDMA alcohol and marijuana with a contribution from underlying heart disease he said there was no way he
00:37:08
would have called Marianne's death a homicide if it were up to him he wrote he'd classify her manner of death as
00:37:15
undetermined but no medical experts testified for the defense no one did not even Marcus he
00:37:23
wanted to testify that he wanted to get across but I didn't think it'd be productive
00:37:30
the trail moved swiftly jury selection started on a Monday and by late Friday afternoon April 8 2022 the case went to
00:37:40
the jury time to deliberate what are you thinking I hit peace man I had Pace over
00:37:45
over really the whole thing deliberations began and ended just like that less than an hour goes by there's a
00:37:55
verdict 38 minutes my first impression was he did it he committed this murder and whatever they
00:38:04
tell me is not going to prove to me that he didn't do it tysha Davis was jur number 11. why did you think that
00:38:11
because the professor was his girlfriend and Clark heinder was a 70 something year old man he couldn't have murdered
00:38:22
her and I just I knew Marcus did it I just knew he did it that's the count one the top charge was
00:38:29
felony murder and the verdict was not guilty not guilty verdicts on the other charges followed in quick succession and
00:38:38
it's just not guilty not guilty not guilty not guilty with each one my heart just kind of
00:38:46
sucked lower and lower I thought there was no way that he could get off we were in utter shock everyone was
00:38:55
shocked and of course I look over at Marcus and he's got a smirk on his face and
00:39:01
my blood was boiling how does Taisha explain her change of heart I felt like the prosecuting attorney
00:39:11
she painted the picture that Marcus Lillard was a womanizer he was a narcissist but they didn't prove that he
00:39:18
was a killer what do you think happened to Marianne jockley that night I don't know what
00:39:25
happened that frustrated me because we don't know what happened to her or if she really was strangled if she
00:39:33
died from strangulation who strangled her so it sounds like you even questioned if there was a murder in the
00:39:39
first place I have my doubts about that judge Allison Burleson also had doubts but they were of a different nature Mr
00:39:47
Lillard I've come to quite a different conclusion than what the jury has come to it is quite clear to this court that
00:39:54
the only person you were concerned with that night May 11 2019 was herself she immediately found that Marcus violated
00:40:02
his probation for that 2015 drug conviction and he was remanded to prison my conscious is very clear when it comes
00:40:10
to Marianne do I miss Marianne yeah I was lucky to get that time with her that I did
00:40:19
and I cherish that [Music] I think of Marion every single day I have her name on my bracelet I'm wearing
00:40:28
her earrings right now Marianne was the most beautiful Spirit she worked hard she cared about
00:40:40
things that other people didn't care about the teeny weeny creatures that Keep Us Alive
00:40:47
that keep our world turning [Music] thank you [Music] a young woman vanishes something's
00:41:24
terribly wrong the prime suspect had an unthinkable past I met Rick Ennis when he was 12 years old I said where are
00:41:33
your parents he says I killed them both 48 hours Saturday on CBS since streaming
