July 18, 2023 / 41:11

This episode covers the murder investigation of Heather Bogle, featuring discussions on her disappearance, the discovery of her body, and the subsequent investigation led by Sheriff Chris Hilton and Detective Sean O'Connell.

Heather Bogle, a 28-year-old single mother, was last seen leaving her job at Whirlpool in Clyde, Ohio, in April 2015. Her family reported her missing when she failed to pick up her daughter from school. The investigation took a dark turn when her body was found in the trunk of her car, revealing signs of a brutal murder.

Detective Sean O'Connell initially focused on several suspects, including Kiana Bohr and Omar Satchel, but faced criticism for his handling of the case. The episode highlights the community's response and the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving the case.

After a change in leadership, Sheriff Chris Hilton reopened the investigation, leading to the identification of Daniel Myers as the primary suspect. The episode details the evidence against Myers, including DNA found under Heather's fingernails and GPS records placing her at his trailer.

Ultimately, Daniel Myers was arrested and pled guilty to Heather's murder, while Sean O'Connell faced legal consequences for his mishandling of the investigation. The episode concludes with reflections on the impact of the case on the community and the pursuit of justice for Heather Bogle.

TLDR

Heather Bogle's murder investigation reveals police mishandling and leads to the arrest of Daniel Myers after years of searching for justice.

00:00:20
of Sandusky County in northwest Ohio this is not the kind of place where a crime like this occurs
00:00:27

00:00:37
at the whirlpool corporation located in Clyde Ohio my name is Sean O'Connell I was the lead
00:00:43
investigator of the Heather Bogle investigation she worked midnights which means she
00:00:48
would clock in roughly at 10 10 30 in the evening she worked her shift and she clocked out at approximately 6 17 that
00:00:56
following morning she was last seen leaving the parking lot of the whirlpool Corporation
00:01:03
and then he disappeared she failed to pick up her daughter from school and this was like clockwork she never failed
00:01:11
to pick up her daughter the Sandusky County Sheriff's Department tonight is working to solve a mystery where is 28
00:01:19
year old Heather Bogle her family is the one that within hours they were posting
00:01:24
signs putting things on Facebook and all other types of social media somebody has her and they need to bring
00:01:29
her home why would they want to uh kidnap her I don't know and as the the minutes and the hours
00:01:36
went by and people became more and more worried because they could not find her she doesn't have any enemies that we
00:01:40
know of we just have no idea how this could happen she had a lot of chaos going on a lot of things were going on
00:01:47
in her personal life she was vulnerable at that point she's an amazing woman and
00:01:50
she's always there for me and we want her to know we're here for her this is solved
00:01:56
the old-fashioned way bit by bit tracking down every potential lead because you never know when that lead
00:02:02
turns into a break the day after she disappeared I get a phone call from the sheriff's office
00:02:10
that Heather's vehicle had been located I had roll Patrol unlock the vehicle and
00:02:18
then we popped the trunk and we saw something that we did not expect to see I don't think anybody had a clue about
00:02:25
the mystery the Intrigue and the story that was going to come out of the opening of that trunk
00:02:39
foreign [Music] foreign [Music] a lot of times in law enforcement we look at things and we try not to see
00:03:34
them for what they are it's almost as if it's not real but this one was different say Sheriff
00:03:41
Chris Hilton what they found inside the trunk of Heather bogle's car was painfully real what did they find in the
00:03:50
trunk they found a beautiful young woman who had been savagely beaten and murdered
00:03:59
that beautiful young woman was Heather Bogle when you know what she looked like when you saw the pictures of her and to
00:04:06
see what was in the trunk of the car it was as if they were two completely different things and when you look at
00:04:11
that kind of stuff it it sinks in it it's home her wounds told a harrowing story of
00:04:20
torture unbelievably awful and grit says prosecutor Tim Braun a lot of defensive
00:04:28
wounds on the hand for blocking bringing your hands up protecting what did that tell you told me she'd
00:04:35
fought that she was physically overpowered by someone beaten down and then handcuffed cause of
00:04:42
death two shots to the back penetrating vital organs in her chest Heather's body was placed in the trunk
00:04:50
of her car curled up in a semi-fetal position wearing an oversized Mickey Mouse t-shirt
00:04:57
looked like it had been posed to create a certain effect her hands were coiled up it looked like a child sleeping to
00:05:04
some degree Heather's hair had been chopped off at the scalp imagine taking like a pocket
00:05:11
knife and just going like this with it just picking it up and chopping It Off and her fingernails cut down to the
00:05:19
cuticles possibly her murderer's attempt to destroy DNA says Braun so somebody had cleaned her up extremely carefully
00:05:28
after she died who would want to do this to her a psychopath well we're praying for wisdom
00:05:41
and under Lord God and I pray for the family of Heather this evening father I pray for our friends
00:05:46
shocked frightened and grief struck the locals turned out in droves demanding Justice for Heather Bogle and holding
00:05:54
benefits for her five-year-old daughter Mackenzie the woman who walks out of the
00:05:59
world pool Factory at 6 17 am Heather Bogle who is she a 28 year old single mother
00:06:06
who worked hard at that factory to provide a wonderful life for her daughter she was well liked
00:06:14
with dreams for a better life Heather had just finished nursing school she wanted something better than working
00:06:21
at Whirlpool not that Whirlpool is bad but she wanted some more for herself and for her for her daughter
00:06:27
but the days leading up to her death were fraught with tension she had just failed her nursing board exams and was
00:06:35
in the midst of an ugly breakup for the past year Heather had been involved in her first same-sex
00:06:41
relationship with a woman she met at Whirlpool Carmela bedia but they just had a big blow up there had been threats
00:06:49
made hadn't there there had been that yes the text messages and the phone calls and some of the exchanges were
00:06:55
very very nasty lead detective Sean O'Connell says Carmella was one of the first
00:07:03
people he looked at there was an uh some type of a verb or altercation between Heather and her girlfriend Carmella that
00:07:10
Wednesday Heather goes in to work on Wednesday evening and leaves work Thursday morning not to
00:07:20
be seen but after examining Carmela's phone records and speaking to her several times O'Connell determined Carmella was
00:07:29
not the killer you were comfortable ruling her out absolutely he was not so quick to rule out this
00:07:37
woman Kiana Bohr a single mother who lived in the apartment complex where Heather's car and body were discovered
00:07:44
is it fair to say the your interactions with Kiana Bohr early on raised your suspicion about her
00:07:53
absolutely absolutely yeah from her demeanor from her reluctancy on wanting to talk to us yeah absolutely
00:08:00
but even more than that it was that Mickey Mouse shirt on Heather bogle's body there was some speculation that the
00:08:08
shirt that was found on Heather Bogle again it's a red XL Mickey Mouse type t-shirt cannabor was seen to be wearing
00:08:16
that same type of t-shirt Andy says her Facebook postings read like a confession
00:08:22
referenced here in the police report Kiana is making statements on her Facebook page that I can't believe what
00:08:29
happened just happened O'Connell says she also makes mention in another post about doing eight to ten years for
00:08:36
murder and pleading Insanity the day Heather disappears the day that she disappeared yes April 9th of 2015. he
00:08:44
says he became even more suspicious when he learned that Omar Satchel a man who served time on home invasion and
00:08:51
Firearms charges was in Kiana's apartment the night Heather's body was found one more Satchel very quickly becomes a
00:09:01
person of interest to you you did why cause of his involvement as far as being in the vicinity of the time of her body
00:09:12
being discovered O'Connell believed Omar knew Heather that he sometimes sold her pot but even
00:09:19
more importantly O'Connell says he found a link between Omar satchel and what possibly could have been the gun used to
00:09:27
kill Heather during the course of my investigation I find out that Omar may have stolen a
00:09:33
small caliber type firearm neither the gun nor the bullets were ever found but O'Connell claims A source
00:09:41
told him that a third accomplice a friend of Omar is named Kerry Jeffrey dumped the murder weapon so according to
00:09:49
my source who was standing next to Kerry Kerry walked up along the Riverbanks and
00:09:54
tossed this black bag containing the fire I'm using the homicide into the river which ultimately prompt us to launch a
00:10:01
dive team into the river and hopes to recover the bay came up empty came up empty
00:10:07
so what would the three of these people have as a motive to kill Heather bubble I don't know what their motive would
00:10:13
have been O'Connell didn't have enough to arrest them but continued building his murder
00:10:21
case against the three a case newspaper man Matt westerhold was watching with interest
00:10:28
he and his paper had a long history reporting on the detective we were concerned because we didn't believe
00:10:35
detective O'Connell could conduct a legitimate investigation westerhold had just found his next big
00:10:44
story was this bad police work or was he a bad cop it was both [Music] [Music] there was Kiana Bohr before Heather
00:11:11
bogle's murder got a house for me and my kids got a good job at a nursing home and everything was going real smooth
00:11:20
and then there's Kiana born now so it's like the Dark Cloud that's always over my head and who put that
00:11:28
dark cloud over your head says detective O'Connell targeted her from the night Heather's body was found
00:11:37
I lived in this apartment right over here raiding her apartment they went out of their way to throw all of our
00:11:44
pictures in the trash and storming the nursing home where she worked with a warrant for her DNA
00:11:51
I'm reeling a resident out the dining room to go get him ready for bed and the whole all the detectives the police come
00:11:58
in there guns out and they had their guns drawn yes O'Connell publicly named Kiana a suspect
00:12:05
she lost her job her apartment and her reputation I had to keep my son out of school I have people in my inbox telling
00:12:14
me I'm a monster and me and my kids deserve to die and all that type of stuff because what he told the newspaper
00:12:19
and the newspaper put out there Kiana says she was an easy target poor black and voiceless she says O'Connell
00:12:28
never even asked her if she had an alibi he never did that because he wasn't interested in ruling me out he was just
00:12:34
interested in making me guilty he was trying to find facts that would fit his theory that you were involved
00:12:42
Kiana had several run-ins with Sean O'Connell before he helped put her ex-boyfriend in prison for a mandatory
00:12:49
10 years on a drug charge she says that's what she was talking about in her Facebook post that O'Connell found so
00:12:57
incriminating the only reason why I would have posted about the eight to ten years is because I was upset that my
00:13:02
child's father just got 10 years mandatory for his first drug defense here he is doing 10 years for a drug
00:13:08
offense and they're people who get eight to ten for Murder by putting Insanity that's what you were posting and it
00:13:14
didn't have anything to do nothing at all with Heather Bogle and that Mickey Mouse shirt found on
00:13:22
Heather's body the one he insinuated belonged to Kiana was it your shirt no I only owned one Mickey Mouse hoodie well
00:13:31
sweatshirt in my life so it's a sweatshirt not a t-shirt you don't own a t-shirt no were you involved in the
00:13:37
death of Heather Bogle no did you cover up having a role in covering up Heather bogle's death
00:13:45
desperate to clear her name Kiana contacted Matt westerhold managing editor of the Sandusky Register I've
00:13:54
never had a criminal Suspect come to me and say hey I'm being targeted by police
00:13:59
for a murder I didn't commit that's never happened he quickly came to believe O'Connell was
00:14:05
framing her if you interview uh kyota Boris she's very believable and and it seemed obvious that you know she didn't
00:14:13
know anything about this westerholt had been covering Sean O'Connell and his then boss former
00:14:20
Sheriff Eric Overmeyer for years publishing numerous reports accusing them of corruption and incompetence one
00:14:28
headline that the paper ran the headline is Sheriff over Meyer and detective O'Connell have a history botching
00:14:34
high-profile cases right Fair headline yeah absolutely we probably documented a half dozen different cases where the
00:14:43
families involved you know were complaining bitterly about how they were treated by law enforcement
00:14:49
and there was no doubt in my mind that that they were botching these investigations my guest today is keona
00:14:56
Bohr westerhold featured Kiana's story on his webcast several times do you do you consider yourself a victim of
00:15:04
detective O'Connell's I very much do he was determined to keep the pressure on O'Connell we like to say that's who we
00:15:12
are that's what we do in this case we turned out to be a consistent persistent Watchdog that didn't give up
00:15:21
despite the public scrutiny O'Connell spent a year and two months pursuing his theory that Kiana Omar and Kyrie acted
00:15:30
together to kill Heather Bogle even in the face of strong scientific evidence to the contrary
00:15:37
authorities found DNA under Heather's cuticle they believed left by her killer but it didn't come back as Omar Satchel
00:15:47
did not didn't come back as Kiana boers it did not didn't come back as Kerry Jeffries it did not so the fact that the
00:15:54
DNA under her fingernails does not belong to any of those three doesn't rule them out in your mind it does not
00:16:00
but in his report to the prosecutor seeking an indictment O'Connell didn't even mention that the DNA did not match
00:16:07
in a mission that would soon come out in the open just one week later detective O'Connell was taken off the case and
00:16:16
placed on leave I knew the end was coming he was forced to resign he wasn't the only one in trouble I take full
00:16:26
responsibility today Sheriff overmyer was arrested and sent to prison for stealing drugs
00:16:33
sounds to me like law enforcement in the Sandusky County Sheriff's Department not
00:16:39
in Tip-Top shape between openmeyer and O'Connell well yeah if you're your Sheriff who is the the lead officer of
00:16:47
your criminal drug task force has an addiction problem you got problems O'Connell's Bogle file was handed over
00:16:56
to the state Bureau of Investigations what they've discovered was not only shocking says Chris Hilton who took over
00:17:04
as Sheriff it was Criminal he attempted to indict people for murder that had absolutely nothing to do with
00:17:12
it is this a case of a cop being overly ambitious is is racism or is this incompetence anything I could say would
00:17:21
be pure speculation Nobody Knows the case better than you what do you think I'm gonna say it's a little combination
00:17:27
of everything you just said newly elected Sandusky County prosecutor Tim Braun agreed he opened a criminal
00:17:35
investigation that led to O'Connell's arrest and indictment on four felony charges
00:17:42
he lied he falsified police reports he tampered with evidence he tried to make a case that he didn't have
00:17:51
and he tried to push it through O'Connell was charged with misleading a public official and destroying
00:17:57
concealing and tampering with evidence you're looking at some serious charges I'm looking at some very serious charges
00:18:05
did you mishandle evidence absolutely not you knowingly make false statements absolutely not altered destroy conceal
00:18:12
remove evidence of course not so where are they getting it from they're getting it from
00:18:18
speculation that's not how Chris Hilton sees it was there any reason to focus on Kiana bore
00:18:25
after the first day or two I would say no she had nothing to do with it and neither he says did Omar Satchel or
00:18:36
Kerry Jeffrey the BCI investigation showed the three suspects never knew Heather never met Heather never sold
00:18:44
their pot but Sean O'Connell still stands behind his investigation right or wrong so you
00:18:51
can be wrong but that doesn't mean you had tunnel vision I could be detectives are wrong all the time you were just
00:18:57
wrong I'm not even here to say that I'm wrong because the investigation I never had the
00:19:03
opportunity to close out that job fell to the new sheriff and he wasn't going to stop until he got it
00:19:11
right I knew it was a solvable case I just knew it had to be done right I said we
00:19:16
are going to open this up to the point where it just happened every lead every person everybody is a suspect until we
00:19:24
can eliminate them and that's what we did thank you Heather Bogle had been dead for nearly
00:19:49
two years when Sheriff Hilton and his team took over the investigation they had no clue who killed her but were
00:19:56
positive it was not a random killing we felt that whoever did this had something
00:20:02
personal against Heather someone she just had a huge fight with someone who'd written her an angry note
00:20:10
found in the car where she lay dead in the trunk someone like Heather's ex-girlfriend Carmela bedillo
00:20:18
to me she would be a logical person to investigate I mean again when you look at the condition with which Heather was
00:20:25
found there was passion and anger and what whoever did that Carmella who had been quickly cleared by
00:20:31
O'Connell went straight to the top of Hilton's suspect list so you guys are basically I was done
00:20:38
like well it sounds like she was she was done too she was brought in for questioning the last month I'll agree
00:20:45
with everybody it was horrible it was Rocky it was you didn't know what was going to happen
00:20:51
next but the sheriff would soon rule out Carmella when he found a new suspect investigators started digging through
00:20:59
Heather's social media and Gmail accounts and suddenly there it was stored in Heather's GPS records by
00:21:07
Google an electronic trail of coordinates showing Heather's exact movements from the moment she left work
00:21:14
at 6 17 a.m is this your aha moment absolutely we knew we had something we could at least say definitively this is
00:21:22
where she went after she left work that morning at 6 30 a.m 13 minutes after leaving
00:21:30
work Heather's phone GPS places her in a trailer home a few miles from the whirlpool plant
00:21:38
and we find out later that day it belongs to Daniel Myers who was Daniel Myers we had no idea it's
00:21:44
time we find out very quickly that Daniel Myers worked with Heather we find out that he worked with her that
00:21:51
night we find out that he left approximately the same time that morning that's when we went aha we got something
00:22:01
[Music] investigators knocked on Daniel Meyer's door he was Cooperative but not overly he kind of distanced himself from
00:22:15
knowing Heather they recorded their conversation did you know her at all very very little very little just more
00:22:24
very I mean very limited conversation one of the things he says that really makes the hair stand up like why are you
00:22:32
still investigating this is what he's asking like this is this is done it's over with it's been two years yes it's a
00:22:39
little odd that you know you guys are I know it's cold case and you guys are just you know grasping at straws trying
00:22:45
to figure out when I listened to it I was like oh my God this might be our guy this this might be
00:22:52
our guy and then the Clincher was at the end of that interview they asked for a DNA sample well I'm gonna pass on that I
00:23:00
didn't really know the girl or anything like that he's the first person that said no
00:23:06
investigators returned two days later with a warrant for his DNA to match it against the DNA found under Heather's
00:23:14
cuticle we're going to search for it for your DNA okay so what we wanted you to do is to
00:23:20
be a little more forthcoming to help us narrow this thing down because you know what we're narrowing it
00:23:26
down okay okay they got their sample and results came back five days later my major came into
00:23:34
my office and he says Sheriff at DNA belongs to Danny Myers I think we almost wanted to break into
00:23:42
tears it was it was like we have him we got him they learned this man who said he barely
00:23:49
knew Heather Bogle had contributed 125 dollars and wrote a warm condolence note on her GoFundMe page and made sure
00:23:58
people knew he was at Heather's funeral he signs the registry book at her funeral yes
00:24:06
it's the kind of guy who's trying to look normal he's trying not to do anything that would trigger in anybody's
00:24:12
mind that maybe Danny Myers is just a little different it turns out Daniel Myers had been
00:24:18
hiding in plain sight all along shortly after Heather's murder a Whirlpool employee sent an email to detective Sean
00:24:28
O'Connell saying she knew someone capable of this crime and she's she Point Blank told us I was
00:24:35
going to tell him I thought it was Daniel Myers but O'Connell already fixated on his
00:24:40
three suspects never followed up if you had worked the whirlpool angle a little harder do you think Daniel
00:24:47
Meyer's name might have surfaced I don't know how we could have worked it any harder I mean what more could we have
00:24:52
done it didn't take Sheriff Hilton very long to figure it out just five months after opening the new investigation he
00:25:00
and his team arrested the single father at a summer Campground and the only thing that he ever said was
00:25:07
oh my God they're here to get me and then we took him into custody and that was pretty much the last thing he
00:25:13
said to us I think he got a story to tell we'd like to hear it okay searching the trailer investigators
00:25:22
never found the gun or bullets that killed Heather but they did find damning evidence new floorboards bought less
00:25:29
than a week after her murder meaning what meaning we believe we found where she was murdered in his trailer
00:25:36
and he would have replaced the subflooring because it was covered in blood blood possible bullet holes any
00:25:44
number of reasons you got to cover it up the trailer yielded other Secrets he liked to keep women's underwear in a
00:25:51
safe slowly they began piecing together a disturbing picture of a sexual predator
00:25:58
a man focused on control domination and humiliation he had videos and of himself
00:26:06
with women and other women he was very disturbing when it comes to his sexual fetishes
00:26:17
after Daniel Meyer's arrest ten women came forward saying he raped them none of them went to the police
00:26:25
beforehand and said this guy at the plant sexually attacked me in this trailer they were all embarrassed and
00:26:32
ashamed by it investigators say Myers picked women he thought would stay silent and what better way to to solidify that
00:26:40
than to find ones that are vulnerable and Heather Bogle was vulnerable reeling over her nasty breakup with
00:26:48
Carmela and they learned from Myers she was also upset over a text her brother said calling her too stupid to pass her
00:26:57
licensed practical nursing exam and here's Daniel Myers come tell me all about it that's right
00:27:06
she went to his trailer says Braun expecting a friend but finding a killer I think it happened immediately as soon
00:27:15
as she came in the door [Music] I think he came on to her sexually she probably immediately rejected him
00:27:24
I think he grabbed her I think she punched him in the face we know he had one cracked tooth and one broken tooth
00:27:31
that he repaired with Super Glue and that I think he physically overpowered her beat her into submission
00:27:43
handcuffed her beat her some more stripped her probably had her on the bed and we know that because he ended up
00:27:51
replacing his mattress at the end of the month after the half homicide occurred and I think he tortured her for a long
00:27:59
time and then I think he shot and killed her if you think Danny Myers could be a
00:28:07
serial killer I've always considered that a possibility in a relatively strong one
00:28:15
interested in learning more about the case see evidence photos on Facebook at 48 hours
00:28:33
prosecutor Tim Braun has made a career of putting violent Killers Behind Bars and says Daniel Myers seems like a pro
00:28:42
most people first time they kill somebody they're overcome with emotion they do stupid things Danny Myers
00:28:49
rationally and meticulously attempted to cover this case up that usually takes experience
00:28:57
he seemed to have it down to a science says Brawn cutting down Heather's fingernails and cleaning her body in an
00:29:04
apparent attempt to remove DNA evidence have I dealt in the past with people who've attempted to destroy genetic
00:29:11
material absolutely and usually not their first rodeo not their first rodeo and they get good at kill covering
00:29:21
up because they want to do it again and so when I saw that yeah it raised a lot of questions in my mind
00:29:33
lorianne Haley says if Tim Braun is looking for proof Daniel Myers killed before
00:29:39
he doesn't need to look any further than her sister Leanne sluder you think your
00:29:46
sister was murdered yes by Danny yes no question no question Leanne was Daniel Meyer's ex-girlfriend
00:29:53
and the mother of his son nearly six years before Heather bogle's death Leanne was found with a single gunshot
00:30:01
to her chest this crime scene photograph shows the 22 caliber rifle beside her authorities
00:30:08
quickly ruled it a suicide when you heard that word suicide no in a way no I just talked to her 12 hours prior
00:30:18
there is no indication whatsoever that she was crying for help or given me any signal
00:30:31
even more alarming says lorianne is why Leanne had a gun at all I knew my sister hated guns she would
00:30:39
not allowed to have a gun in her house that's a giant red flag yes he supposedly told investigators it was for
00:30:46
her protection dinner myself protection from what Daniel Myers admitted to giving the gun
00:30:54
to Leanne for her security but lorianne was skeptical of how her sister could use it to shoot herself in the chest
00:31:02
with its long barrel and then leave it lying neatly next to her body how could she do that with a rifle yeah
00:31:12
impossible bigger well that's the issue a lot would remain unanswered says Tim Braun Leanne
00:31:22
sluder suicide in my opinion was not a properly processed crime scene in the sense that it was not photographed well
00:31:28
evidence wasn't collected it wasn't done correctly so if they had done gun residue tests on Daniel Meyer's
00:31:37
hands in that 2009 investigation they would know unequivocally whether he had shot that
00:31:44
weapon that sounds like standard operating procedure right well this is Sandusky County Sheriff's Office and at
00:31:51
that time it was not a professional agency I believe the investigators at the time
00:31:57
took Daniel at his word that she killed herself do you think if your sister's death had
00:32:04
been properly investigated Heather Bogle would be alive yes he didn't hesitate one bit no
00:32:11
investigators recently took another look at Leanne's death they came to the same
00:32:16
conclusion of suicide after determining Leanne was physically able to reach the rifles trigger after all
00:32:24
an undated letter also surfaced authorities say this is her handwriting and reads like a suicide note all I ever
00:32:32
wanted was to just die so that the hurt would stop Daniel Meyer's relatives say they found
00:32:38
it in his home after his arrest I don't believe it was fully authenticated I don't understand why he
00:32:46
had it for so long and then all of a sudden it pops up Case Closed done It's just sad that you know the justice
00:32:56
system wasn't on our side I know that he killed her he knows it problem is you can't prove it
00:33:06
now lorianne is hoping to get Justice for her sister through another victim's case if found guilty of killing Heather
00:33:14
Bogle Daniel Myers could be sentenced to death and in your view your sister's killer Yes would be executed yes not
00:33:24
just Heather bogle's killer it would be both yes how strong a case do you have in my
00:33:35
experience we had a very very good case Tim Braun has Meyer's DNA under Heather's fingernail the GPS records
00:33:45
placing her at his trailer and his history of violence against women but there's one huge obstacle
00:33:52
Sean O'Connell from a trial lawyer's standpoint it was a nightmare it's a nightmare because you have the original
00:33:59
investigator pointing the finger at other people and that would provide a convenient
00:34:05
alternate suspect theory for any defense attorney so before Daniel Myers could stand trial the prosecutor believed Sean
00:34:13
O'Connell would have to be discredited once and for all officially ruling out his three suspects Omar Satchel Carrie
00:34:22
Jeffrey and Kiana Bohr I just hope O'Connell did to us doesn't affect Heather's Justice
00:34:28
and convicting Daniel Myers and they were about to find out tomorrow at this time I could be at a
00:34:37
local County Jail getting ready to be booked in I don't want that to happen I don't think that should happen I don't
00:34:42
think what I did warns this to happen [Music] it was a stunning change of Fortune Sean
00:35:04
O'Connell once a detective charged with upholding the law hey buddy is now facing a trial for breaking it accused
00:35:12
of four felonies in connection to his Heather Bogle murder investigation in which he focused on three innocent
00:35:19
people O'Connell remains defiant do you feel you owe Omar Satchel Kiana bore and
00:35:27
Kerry Jeffries an apology why would I apologize I mean if you look at if you look they didn't do it how do we know
00:35:33
that for sure but the day's trial was set to begin O'Connell finally admitted to a mistake
00:35:40
he pled guilty to one felony count tampering with evidence by omitting the DNA results that excluded his three
00:35:48
suspects all I can do now is just kind of hope for the best not only for me but for my
00:35:54
family when it comes time for sentencing the former detective arrived at his sentencing hearing with his wife and
00:36:01
family by his side hoping for probation but preparing for prison when I took this investigation as I've done with
00:36:10
many other investigations throughout my career O'Connell addressed the court in a plea for leniency I wasn't purposely
00:36:17
trying to leave out anything I was just trying to highlight what I had at that point judge Patricia Cosgrove zeroed in
00:36:25
on his failure to report the DNA results why didn't you include that you're right
00:36:31
your honor I did not include it and I take full responsibility for that and for what it's worth I apologize for not
00:36:36
doing that but again I did that because I was simply trying to get the prosecutor a feel on why I thought it
00:36:43
was these three people one of those three people Kiana Bohr finally got the chance to address the man she says
00:36:50
ruined her life I have lost time with my children time with my family I have lost friends I have lost family I
00:36:59
have pretty much lost every single thing that I've had because of this man and I'm still trying to get it back
00:37:07
after listening to all the testimony judge Cosgrove took a hard line I gave him some consideration for his 25 years
00:37:15
of service his military service his volunteer work but he has to go to prison this has to send a message to
00:37:24
other law enforcement officers hey when you look at a case look at all of it and
00:37:29
when you present a case present all of it today's the day of sentencing take him into custody
00:37:35
Sean O'Connell was sentenced to two years in state prison what about uh O'Connell the newspaper man who had
00:37:43
covered O'Connell Through The Years in this case and several others was overwhelmed
00:37:52
to see deep huh the families it was a moment a Vindication for the families that he hurt
00:38:04
because he he hurt them so bad and and he could have there it would have been so easy to just do the right thing
00:38:13
is Sean O'Connell where he should be in prison anytime somebody that wears the same badge that I do
00:38:20
gets in trouble breaks the law convicted of a crime they need to pay for it I believe he is where he should be
00:38:33
with the O'Connell case now resolved Braun was finally ready to take on Daniel Myers in court
00:38:40
we had more than enough to prove it Beyond A Reasonable Doubt but within days of the trial starting Myers
00:38:47
derailed the proceedings you all right what's going on he was found face down in itself one two three dazed and
00:38:56
incoherent in what turned out to be a failed suicide attempt do I think he was trying to commit
00:39:02
suicide I think he was trying to create a medical emergency buy some time buy some time
00:39:07
but time finally ran out Daniel Myers chose to plead guilty rather than face the possibility of a death sentence you
00:39:17
understand that a plea of guilty is a complete admission of guilt yes I want you to know that you took away a
00:39:31
mother and a friend and a loved one that no one could ever get back one time suspect Carmela bedillo spoke directly
00:39:37
to the man who tortured and killed her former girlfriend now I want you to know Daniel miles
00:39:44
forgive you people say Sheriff how could he do this why would he do this to such a young
00:39:54
beautiful woman what was he thinking and I would tell them this man is a monster
00:39:59
Daniel Myers will have a lot of time to think about what he has done he'll spend
00:40:04
the rest of his days in prison with no chance of parole after nearly four years the people of
00:40:13
this County finally saw Justice is a great place I think it's a little better now
00:40:21
and I'm proud of that Heather bogle's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the people of
00:40:27
Sandusky County who are now free to remember the beautiful young mother she was and
00:40:33
imagine a life that could have been right now it seems as if everything is unpredictable we're all stuck at home
00:40:45
and like you I'm feeling a bit helpless right now but I want you to know we are here for you all working together you
00:40:52
are not alone that's right because we're all in this and we're all in this together
