Kansas prosecutors use unusual autopsy to investigate woman's shooting death

April 26, 2024 / 02:24

This episode of 48 Hours investigates the 2019 death of Kristen Trickle, initially ruled a suicide, and the subsequent doubts raised by local prosecutor Aaron Cunningham.

Kobby Trickle called 911 after finding his wife Kristen bleeding from a gunshot wound. Sergeant Brandon Halman responded to the scene, where Kristen was found clinging to life. She died three days later.

The coroner's initial ruling of suicide was questioned by prosecutor Aaron Cunningham, who doubted whether Kristen could have fired the large caliber revolver found at the scene. Cunningham demonstrated the gun's weight and awkwardness.

Kobby Trickle's attorney, Cassie Ziggler, argued that Kobby's immediate call to 911 indicated his innocence. Authorities then ordered a psychological autopsy to assess Kristen's state of mind, a first in Kansas for a criminal case.
